Hello everyone, I'm just getting into this exercise thing. I decided about a month ago to start taking it seriously and so I started doing a tae-bo dvd in the morning, which has been great by at the moment we have loads of stuff in the living room, making it hard for me to make space in there and do my exercise! So I would like to start jogging as I know it is great cardio, but because of my size I'm just too embaressed to go out on the streets and do it. I'm a UK size 20, and really don't want to go and jog on the streets, cannot afford a treadmill and don't intend on forking out the ridiculous gym charges at my leisure centre.
So can anyone tell me this: if I started doing jogging on the spot, would that be a good cardio workout? If so, any advice for how long? Thanks, everyone seems so helpful here so advice would be much appreciated!

There are other forms of cardio, like your tae-bo video that are just as effective as jogging is. I would suggest browsing around this site, alot of very smart people posted excellent workouts that you can use at home. I also believe that this site will make you a workout with a cardio plan just by using stuff in your home if you put in the right information!

but i mean jogging on the spot - is it as or less effective than jogging to and from somewhere? by the way, i just tried what you said about the cardio plan, and its great, thank you!

If it elevates your heartrate enough it will be effective

Hey don't be embarrassed to jog on the streets! It's more than the person in their car is doing! You should never be ashamed of making positive strides in your health!

It utilizes less muscle mass and be tougher on the joints than actual jogging... not that jogging is all that great to begin with though.

You really should be a positive influence to people...
If I see a fat person jogging down the street in gym clothes I think 'Good for you! You're doing something to get healthy!'
If I see a fat person un the bus stuffing their face with chocolate I think 'Get rid of the chocolate, and do something useful, like ride a bike.'
The first is positive, the second negative.
I know it's hard to start doing something you feel you look silly doing, but if more over weight people started working out properly in the streets, then more people would join and they would all feel better.

If I see anyone jogging I think "ouch your poor knees, ankle, hips and low back"....
Get out and walk, power walk, even add in some all sprints, but jogging is just too hard on your body, especially if you are overweight. Theimpact of jogging on your knees has been compered to being dropped on your head from a 6 or 10 foot height (sorry, couldn't find the exact data) but you get the picture.
Never be embarrassed to be out and about exercising - you are doing more than most people ever do. And if someone gives you guff or even looks at you funny, use it as mental fuel - as in "I will show them, I am going to be fitter, healthier and leaner this time next month and they will be exactly the same if not fatter. HA!"
Umm, I guess I have issues, lol.
There are tons of great cardio workouts you can do without equipemnt, and mnay you can even do at home. Check your loacl library for dvds and check the forums here, there are some cardio threads and at-home cardio threads with good suggestions.
