OK so I've read alot about shin splints but I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, but these things are really killing me and I can't run as far as I want to. They are really hindering my cardio workout. Anybody else had this problem? I would see a physician but I'm a broke college student with no insurance so that is kind of out of the question.

No need to fret, it will go away in no time as long as you keep it up!

Biggest mistake people make is stopping, you need to just keep going and it will be gone.

SFGinats - shin splints do not just go away! Shin splints are healed by ceasing activity, then gradually adding it back in.

Fouts - you either did too much too soon, or you are running on hard surfaces, or with old/wrong shoes.

Ease off the running and focus on some shin/calf strengthening exercises and stretches. Try searching some running sites for help on the right rehabilitative exercises/stretches.

I get shin splints whenevr i run on anything other than dirt or a rubber-type track. I thought the asphalt path near my house was soft, but it still flared 'em up.

If you can't find the info you need, let me know and I will look it up in my books and post a rehab/strengthening plan for you.

Well I have been running for 4 years now so I'm pretty sure I'm past the point of doing too much too soon. I run on asphalt but I switched to a track and still no help. I ran in the military on asphalt with no problem for a long time and now all of a sudden I have shin splints. I didn't see the thumbtacked post though sorry about that. I'll check it out.

As in RB's Post, It is very important to look at your feet and match your shoes accordingly. If you have flat feet or an abnormally high arch this will be the major stress.

A little discipline at the table and at the gym might help reduce that belly!

I can tell you from personal experience, you definitely want to go to a shoe store, preferrably with knowledgeable sales people and have them help you fit the right running shoe for your foot! I cannot stress how pertinent this is to running. Not only will it relieve shin splints, but knee, lower back and calve issues as well. Make sure not to overuse your shoe. Shoes are like tires, they can only tread so far. Depending on your running shoe, your weight, and your running surface, typical running shoes should last anywhere from 300-500 miles.

Definitely read the article, it was the most thorough one i've read to this day. :)

K fouts, I just found an article I had sitting on my laptop here that I never posted on FT regarding running shoes. It is in the General Exercise & Fitness Forum. Check it out, another very good read.

shin splints ar more often than not cased by a problem with deceleration.

Two things that would cause problems with deceleration:
1. Improper footwear selection
2. Weak ankle dorsiflexion:)

Since footwear was addressed, if that doesn't make a difference (and even if it does) I would add some ankle dorsiflexion exercises in at the end of your regular weight routine.

Just had to follow up on this. I was running in a very expensive pair of adidas shoes and I decided to try out a different shoe and bought a $50 pair of New Balance. New Balance are what they issued us in the Air Force and I never got shin splints so I decided to try the shoe theory. MY SHIN SPLINTS ARE GONE NOW! You guys were right it was the shoes all along!

Nike, Puma, Addidas all suck for running, they don't last worth the crap.

The Best shoe is Mizumo but very expensive so go with the 2nd best New Balance, there is a new shoe out but haven't heard much on them yet they are called Etonic and they cost a tad more then New Balance.

I go to the Finish Line online and look for the discounts and then call local store to see if they are in stock and if not I order then.

On Tuseday these will arive at my house http://www.finishline.com/store/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=cat20065&resetResult=true&productId=prod570038&displayBreadcrumb=true&Ntt=New+Balance+Men%27s+891&N=0&isSearch=true&oldRequestedURI=%2fstore%2fcatalog%2fparamsearch.jsp&y=16&Nu=product_id&x=16&Ntk=ALL_FIELDS

Yeah large link lol but running shoe need to be replaced like every 3 to 4 months so a $80 pair half off is why I do the Finish Line search and inquire.

actually Nike's are what I ran in for years MVP. Honestly the name doesn't matter when it comes to running shoes, it is what fits your foot and body type best!!! Brands are what they are brands, just because that specific shoe works well for you doesn't mean it will for someone else. Everyone is differet.

Fouts - I am very happy to hear that you were able to resolve the issue with the shin splints, I am sure your are feeling much better now. :)

I disagree, stability and cushioning are the big factors and most don't touch New Balance in stability.

Like I said, once again, shoes depend on the individual, i tried New Balance and they didn't work for me, but they worked for Fouts. I was referring to your comment on about Nike, Puma and Addidas all suck for running. I ran several runs and half marathon's with my nike xcelerator's, they fit my foot perfectly, hence different people require different shoes.

Let me rephrase that, any shoe out of the box is GREAT but most don't last worth the crap!

In a shoe I wan't what's going to get the most us out of along with fit and comfort!

Balance and stability plays a major fact for me and I wan't a shoe that will hold that the longest!

But your right out of the box any of the Brand Shoes will do great.

I can see your point of view and to avoid taking any further from the subject and solution than it needs to go, seeing as I love to have the last word, I will partially agree on your opinion. :)
