I don't know how many FT members are long distance runners, but the 12+ mile long runs just seem to be soooooo long. It's really not a question of being able to run them, but more of a question of how to not be bored after the first hour of running. I have my 13-15 miler today. Actually in about t minus 3 hours and counting. Just not overly spunky about it that's all. Anyone have any things they do to take their mind to another place other than the typical. walkman, bsing with a friend, etc. Mine is that I make up cadences and sing them to myself really low because I am america's worst american idol contestant.....

Foe me I would be thinking about calling 911 after a 12+ mile run.
But for my 3 miles I wear the headphones and imagine myself back in my size 6 jeans dancing for my husabnd(I have them hanging over the treadmill for extra motivation)..I can get about 45 minutes in with this...probably doesn't help you much...but you asked!:)

Soooo...how did the run go and how did you occupy yourself for the 15miler. Once I get past 10km all I can think about is the various pains I'm experiencing. I no longer do anything over 10km:surprised: , don't know how you do it!

It didn't go bad. I was sore the next 2 days, but I was reminded that once you get past the 10-12 mile mark you really have to plan things really well... I ran a 14 miler, and the weirdest thing happened. Same as the last year I trained for this event. Mile 12 I was cookin and feeling great and then the 13th mile came around and I felt like I could puke. Weird, but I had to be reminded yet again that I need to pay attention to a few things before I do another long run.
As in make sure the day before you drink the equivilant to niagra falls and when you pee make sure it's clear. Have a good solid meal about 1-2 hours ahead, and bring a cooler so the squirels can't steal your pecan spin snacks during your run. Have some carb snacks handy, and bring both gatorade and water. Sounds kind of funny but every 2 miles I felt like I wanted something different. Water one time, sweet gatorage the next, etc.
The long runs aren't as bad of a mental game if you break them up into 2 mile segments. I find that since there is a water station and a food station in a marathon every 2 miles that it's a good way to break the running down into a more manageable experience mentally.
