During a cardio workout,I can get my heartrate up to about 153BPM....my max heart rate is around 178...is the 153 going to be effective enough for a decent workout or should I aim higher?

Thats about right on at 86%. keep that up for a good 20 min with a warm up and cool down and you will do well. You will eventually have to work harder to get the HR up.
Good Luck.

Just be sure you are calculating your Max HR correctly.
IE: 220-your age is your max.

How do you calculate what your heart rate should be??I see you example carivan, but that doesn't make much sense to me.

KC take 220-your age=your max heart rate..mine is around 179..take at least 70% of that as your target heart rate...

Target heart rate for what? :)
Just do cardio....burn calories. This is the bottom line...calories in < calories out.

Sorry bb1...I meant for weight loss.:)
So according to my calculation( math is FAR from one of my better subjects)If I take 34 from 220 I get 186...and 70% of that is around 130???Does this sound correct?I bought a heart rate monitor years ago and never really figured out how to use it,I thought now would be a good time to learn!

Well, yes your math is correct. But my point is you do not have to be at some magic number to burn calories. Just do your cardio.

I think KC is falling into the "making it harder than it should be" trap, we all have been there. BB has taught me a lot here and one thing is this.....if you want to gain weigh and can not you are not eating enough, also if you want to loose and can not you are eating too much.

OK,Ok..my husband accuses me of "making things harder than they need to be" ALL the time..so I had to laugh at that!:)
So I will give up on the heart rate. But now I am trying to figure out how many cal, protiens, carbs, etc I should be taking in daily. Is this making it to hard also or should I just quit eating the candy on the weekends??My old way of doing things was much easier,to starve and run on the treadmill all day,so these "new"(to me)ideas are confusing.
I am most grateful to all those that put up with my dingy questions:love:
