If you're looking for honest help, set him up with a workout plan from this site. You don't need to exercise 'every day,' just two or three times a week to start... pills (IMO) are likely a waste of cash.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, losing "weight" is relatively simple, especially the more overweight one is.
He simply has to look at his caloric intake. Drop the crap food, even by 10%. This little bit will produce results.
He has to be willing to give up some "comfort foods". No pills are going to do this for him. There is no easy way out.

I will elaborate on bb1 yes losing "weight" is simple.....but it sure isn't easy.
Your dad may want to lose weight quickly but I am sure he didn't gain it quickly....IT takes time, patience, persitence and major dedication. He must daily remind himself why he is doing it what his goals are(he should have short term and long term goals) and remind himself that each step in the right direction is one step closer to victory.
Get him to the gym with you and if he doesn't have any experience with working out now it the tiem to teach him a few things.
