I thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could give our opinions on workout dvds/tapes, just to give people an idea of what is worth the rental or purchase.

Thanks in advance for any and all contributors.

Here is the info i think would be helpful to include:

Name of DVD/ Instructor

Level suggested by program (beginner, intermediate/advanced)

Length of workout, if you know it, don't stress if you don't.

What you liked, what you didn't.

maybe we should establish a rating system?

How about

:dumbbell: - Not really recommended.
:dumbbell::dumbbell: - a good beginner workout
:dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell: - good workout, good routine
:dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell::love: challenging, good routine, advanced

Well - what do you all think?

I will start with an old favorite of mine. It is a good beginner workout and it is one I fall back on when I am feeling like I don't want to get on the elliptical but I really need to get in the cardio.

Kathy Smith's Fat Burning Workout - a low impact aerobic workout.:dumbbell::dumbbell: I think it is about 45 minutes long.

I originally found Kathy's fat burning workout video at the library, copied for myself and wore the tape out when I first got into fitness. I used to get up and creep into the living room while my daughter slept to do the workout.

The routine is easy to follow and less intimidating than a class at a gym. It also does little focus moves, some kind of odd (just go with it and smile), and gives modifiers for less fit/more fit individuals. I really like Kathy Smith because she has always showed modifiers - mnay people never used to and you could feel like a real failure because you couldn't keep up with professionsal dancers/aerobic instructors. You don't have to be a dancer or very coordinated to get a good workout with this tape.

I recently found some copies of the tape on Amazon.com, used & very cheap. It may be hard to find, but it is worth checking your local library or Amazon.com if you are interested.

Cardio Boot Camp

:dumbbell::dumbbell::dumb:(2 1/2 dumbbells)

I lucked out buy this tape(I had to buy it again when I got a dvd player)it was my first one and nothing seems to give me the workout as this one does. There are some moves that I still have problems doing because of the coordination. But by the end of workout one your legs are BURNING!
Workout 1: A variety of strengthening movements and techniques from Tae Kwan Do, basic training calisthenics, boxing and aerobic dance. (15 minutes)

Workout 2: A super toning interval workout where you alternate between boot camp moves and ligtweight training exercises based on Pilates techniques. (15 minutes)

Workout 3: A high intensity challenge workout that combines moves from the first two workouts. (15 minutes)

Instructor: Tracey Mallett
Running Time: 50 Minutes
Intermediate / Advanced

Magnificent Mobility
:dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell:

Eric Cressey and Mike Robertson.

Not a workout video, but if you are an athlete and mobility is an issue, I HIGHLY recommend this DVD. Gives an assortment of mobility drills, as well as a brief (I think they could have done better) description of why each is needed. I personally have extremely tight hip flexors and hip abductors. This DVD gives a complete warm up for this. I can squat ATG without pain, so that is more than I have been able to say in the past
I would recommend it for any athlete or anyone concerned with dynamic flexibility and hip health.
A 15 minute example warm up is included.

Why would I want to do something that doesn't feel like exercise???

okay - Crunch Cardio Salsa
Instructor Giselle Roque de Escobar
About 40 minutes long

This was a fun alternative to the elliptical..but I still feel like I need to do more. I sweated but I didn't feel like I worked hard enough because I was trying to follow the dance routine. The steps aren't too complicated, and I am sure with practice will get more graceful/coordinated, but for now, I am glad that I was in the privacy of my own home.:)

I would sy that someone who is coordinated might get a decent workout with this dvd, and it is a fun switch up.

If you are a beginner, or grace-challenged, as I am, this is a fun thing to stick with and improve on but I don't think it will replace a really good cardio workout.

:dumbbell: and 1/2

Cool - I have been eyeballing those dvds at the store but wasn't sure how cheesy they are.I may have to make them my next big reward!

Beginning Yoga (for dummies) with Sara Ivanhoe
:dumbbell::dumbbell:

This is the dvd that my 10-year-old daughter and I do together after cardio.

Sara Ivanhoe is a good instructor, she brings you through 12 basic yoga moves and gives good modifiers for differing fitness levels (flexibility levels).

There is also an intermediate level on the dvd, but we are still learning the basic 12 before moving on to that.

If you haven't done yoga, but want to relax and increase your felxibility, this is a good start!

My gf just bought "yoga booty ballet" and she cant wait till it gets here. I, on the other hand, saw the infomercial and thought it looked pretty stupid. Has anybody tried it yet?

Quoting from krystalkdaraban:

Carmen Electra's Strip Aerobics...i have disc one and two
Disc One :dumbbell: is dances and the basic dance moves and i would say is mostly for fun as it didnt really wear me out but lots :)and lots:) of fun!!

=============
I'll have to second that!

I have disc one and now that I've learned the 3 routines I use it as warm-up. :love:

I am dying to get my hands on the rest of the DVD's, but they're not available for sale here in Romania :(

I am a big fan of the Winsor Pilates bun & thigh and abs scuplting tapes, but the workout that i really do find challenging is Cindy Crawford's "Next Challenge". :dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell::love:

I know that her first tape with Radu was not very well received because of some risky moves, but this second one is great.

It works your entire body, includes a good warm-up and 30-40 second breaks between sets.

It also contains a glossary at the end explaining every exercise, with tips on how to increase/ decrease difficluty or alternative moves for people with back problems etc.

It's great for every single part of your body: it doesn't leave out arms, pecs shoulders and back, as most other workouts do.

It is about 70 ' long (without the talking) and it leaves you sweating. It does it for me, at least. :big_smile:

Billy Blank's Tae Bo Cardio
44 minutes total (the workout didn't seem like it was that long, but he talks a bit here and there)
:dumbbell::dumbbell:

This is from Billy's newer series, I still like the original Tae Bo series. I really think that most kickboxing workouts are fun and effective and burn hell-calories (just ordered Turbo jam, I will let you know how it is).

My daughter had fun doing this with me, even though she sometimes got a little lost (just keep moving, the next time will be easier to follow).

This workout was fast and fun, but felt a little short. Sometimes it sure seems like Billy does an exercise on one side of the body and then moves on without doing the second side. Oh well, keep moving.

Fun, fast, not too difficult and Billy Blank's is always motivating.:)

Hey Asimmer,

I am actually wondering how the turbo jam is. Please let me know when you can. I was looking at it on the infomercial but wasn't too sure it was worth it. Is Turbo Jam and Tae Bo pretty much the same idea?

Turbo jam is a lot of fun and a good workout. My daughter and I have been doing it for a week now, we both really like it.

It is easier for her to follow than the tae bo, and dancier than the tea bo.

So far we are doing the learn&burn and the 20 minute workout, there are 6 workouts in the set that we got, I think.

I like tea bo, but I find that I am having more fun with turbo jam. My husband thinks i am leaner after the first week, I feel tighter all over. My daughter's energy is crazy from it and she actually looks forward to doing it.

So, I think it is worth the money. You also get a nice, sensible eating plan booklet that gives you tips and techniques and a schedule to follow with the workouts.

I got two new DVD's a couple weeks ago and love them. They are with Jillian Michaels, "The Biggest Winner."

Shapeup - Backside :dumbbell::dumbbell: OR :dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell:

Shapeup - Frontside :dumbbell::dumbbell: OR :dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell:

Both are about 30 minutes combines high impact for burning fat and toning exercises with dumbells and a step. I am a beginner and they were quite challenging for me, and are great for a results oriented "quickie" workout.

Also have Carmen Electra's strip tease 1. Although this is entertaining....not much of a workout.

There are a good handful of excellent videos out there - the key is to determine what your goals are and find the DVDs that are best for you. Of course we all need a certain amount of variety in our routines - so getting into a few DVD training systems keeps things fresh and fun.

I have Yourself Fitness, as well, but haven't done much with it. I like the cardio parts that I have tried - I like that the next move is scrolling at the bottom of the screen so you know what is coming and there are count-downs for each segment.

Okay - I got this DVD from the library and I must say that I am going to buy it, I liked it so much.

Crunch Super Slim Down Pilates/Yoga Blend :dumbbell::dumbbell::dumbbell:

This is a series of flowing yoga poses and matwork that really worked my abs and glutes. I liked that it was fluid and the instructor was easy to follow/understand.

I felt really good afterwards!
