I was just wondering for how many minutes HIIT is healthy... i read a couple posts and all say that u should do it for about 20 min.... I usually do it for 60min.... is this bad, or doesnt it matter anyway (except more burning)

thanks

HIIT is better for about 15 to 20 minutes... yes... the body likely can't handle 60 minutes...

Can you give me an idea of what your HIIT routine is like?

if your doing it for 60 minutes, then your underemphasizing the HIGH INTENSITY portion of the training.

warm up:
increasing the speed by 0.5 mph every 30 sec until i am up at 5.5mph

cardio workout:
1 min 5.5mph
1 min 6.0
1 min 6.5
1 min 7.0
1 min 7.5
back to 5.5mph and repeating this session 2 more times but at the last one (the 3rd), I do 0.5-1min 8.0

this routine i repeat about 3 times... therefore 9 sessions of increasing....

I also usually do after the first end session a 4 min 3.5mph 15%inlice walk.

after i finished the 3 sessions and the 1 incline walk, I do one set where i increase the speed by .5mph every 30 sec till i am up at 8mph for 3 times as well (aka half of the time what the first 3 sets take)..... when i reached the 8.0 of the last one, i dont go back to 5.5 but every 30sec .5mph down... which is a link to my cool down...

8.0 (of the last set) then 7.5, 7.0, 6.5....... 0.5

I really like this workout.... and dont feel toooo overwhelmed... though its about 60min... u think i should reduce it?

Yup... wrestler's right...

If it's taking you more than 25 or 30 minutes, which includes a warmup and cool down, you are at too long.... I did some this morning for a whole 13 minutes and was beat when I was done.

And it also looks as though what you are doing isn't really HIIT...

You should be going all out for a bit, then slow the pace for a bit. You can vary the lengths of each, but what I did this morning was High for 30 seconds, low for 45 seconds... I repeated this a few times and cooled down.

So, basically, go like heck for a bit, then slow the pace down for a bit.

Hope this helped.

Thanks for the advice :)

I just choose this kind of running routin since it brings my HR up to 185 at the fast paceas and at the slow down to arouch 155... which I thought would be pretty good numbers.

Are u including the HR in your HIIT or do u guys just really push it out with no matter how high the HR is?

I keep an eye on my HR. Don't want it to get too high or stay too low...

eh... If im training a client, yes, if its me, then I'm usually not really thinking about putting my hands on those little metal slips to test my HR. to be honest, you can monitor it best by your percieved exertion after you get a feel for it.

Yes I realize my shins are bleeding. And its called a deadlift. Any other questions???

I usually check my pulse when I'm on the slower pace... I don't have those fancy shiney metal things at home!
