Had my first fight today....Sad to say I was under the weather a bit w/ a sore throat an aching headache and a bit of a fever.
For a summary, I arrived at the venue that was staging it at around 2:30pm and got weighed in and practiced a bit to break a sweat and get me going. I weighed in at 118 and my opponent weighed in at around 120...The line was atrocious, I had to wait about 45 minutes to step on a scale! The atmosphere was crazy, their was a good bit of amateurs their all huddled into one room which didnt give much prep time. After the weighin and the brisk workout, I had ate lunch (salad w/ turkey breast with a bowl of baby carrots) and got ready to be announced. I arrived at 2:30p.m. and didnt get to go in until around 6pm which was irritating to me..... It is just awkward hanging out and around the guy you are about to fight....It is just ungodly. I had sparred w/ the kid before so I wasnt to upset or worried... Anyways as I was going to the ring it was crazy, I could just hear my heart pumping in my head and nothing else. I went into my corner waited for my opponent to come out then we met in the center touched gloves and stepped back and the first bell rang. (The fight is 4 2 minute rounds) Round 1 is underway...We both meet in the center of the ring, He nails me w/ a jab in the side of the mouth as I move backwards and he steps forwards, I duck and counter w/ a quick straight and then back him up using my jab. I land about 2 decent shots to his head and a good hook to his body. he grabs onto me and the ref breaks it up and I had to chase him down a bit, he was moving back and forth and I couldnt catch him (he was showing these he didnt do in sparring) so I get frustrated and he pot shots me right into the forehead w/ a jab and backs up and is stealing the fight due to him backing up and not able to catch him and he lands a combination of a jab/hook/jab that doesnt land to well and the road is over. I have no idea what the score was but in my eyes he was winning it. Round 2-He does the same exact thing, I come forward he backs up and shuffles. So I decided to switch up on him and go into the southpaw style (im a switch hitter and box orthodox and southpaw) My footwork is incredible in this stance, So I step back as he steps back which makes him come forward he throws a hook to the body and I dodge it (not by much) and I come back w/ a hook to the head and a jab to the chest he just freezes up, and then being my first fight, I kind of was like :surprised: and didnt capitalize on it and threw an uppercut into his body and tried to come back w/ a hook to the head. I get the uppercut and he counters the hook and comes back w/ a powerful straight into my midsection. At this point im like *ugh* and he hits me w/ 2 more jabs end of round. Not sure how the scoring is again, but I give it to him. Round 3-Different scenario, I came out in an orthodox stance same as him pressed him forward making him backup and lead w/ a jab which catches him around the eye and immediatly he backs up and pushes himself against the ropes...This time no freezing, I switched to southpaw and unleashed a flurry of punches into the midsection and came back w/ a cross to the head and immediately drop back and let him off the ropes, he comes forward and tries to pull a few combinations off and lands a few but majority was blocked...I backed up and tried to counter but to no avail, I could not and just ended up taking a few (which rolled off my headgear) and blocking the rest. Bell rings end of round 3. Once again, proceed to my corner...I thought it could have gone either way. Round 4-He comes storming out of his corner, looking to land body shots and immediately pushes me into the ropes landing hooks and uppercuts into my body and head, I felt withered by his storm and just grabbed him and pushed him back...He came back w/ a few more unclean jabs and I regained my focus and countered his looping hook w/ an uppercut to the chin and pushed forward w/ a jab once again backing him up and putting the pressure on...I back up to get my stance back in order and blaze out throwing a few jabs (I use my jab like no tomorrow it is my best weapon and it is effective) and I squatted down and came back w/ an uppercut (meant to land onto the midsection) but he dodged it and caught it right in the kisser. He fell back and what appeared to me atleast (I was a bit shaky) to be a trip...Fell down....He got up by the count of 4 and as we came both forward the bell rang. I proceed to my corner and easily though the round was mine and I landed clean shots. Ending the fight going into the scorecards. In amateur boxing, their is a point based system based on effective clean punching and no scoring of the rounds. The score was read and it was in victory, of my opponent...Talk about a bit of disappointment I had gave it all I could have (especially w/ the cold) and what can I say I had gotten my gloves off walked over and thanked him for the opportunity and thanked his trainer and gave him a hug and went into the back and changed and watched a great evening of amateur boxing.... I will not stop, I will fight again november 17th in another amateur exhibition in Virginia and I will show up in 100% physical condition and get a "W" on my record.... The review, is how I remember the fight how others may that is another story, but I was in the ring and I thought it was a pretty good fight but the judges decided it his way although I thought it could have gone either way.... I've got to get to bed, the computer screen is shaking like a maniac... Take Care each and everyone of you, I cant stress it enough to encourage everyone to go out and achieve their goals, this was a learning experience for me today and I needed it as I feel complete and wish everyone else the best of luck and hope you all are gracious in your victories and defeats. Goodnight |

Good luck with your next fight, I remember my first ju-jutsu fight, the guy kicked my ass, like there was no tomorrow, he was heavier and had been training for a lot longer then me, but you just have to bounce back,
have a rest, train more and unleash the fury next time along, one good thing you can do is to watch your match, if it was taped....gives you great ideas for next time along Raj |

Sorry you didn't win GG, but it sounds like you gave a good account of yourself, and if you hadn't been ill, who knows?

Good job, GG. Sounds like you are a good sport and will just use this as a learning experience.

Hey, GG. Sorry to hear about the loss, but I'm sure it was a great experience, being your first big fight and all.
So what do you eat during the 24 hours before the fight? I have my first Karate tournament this Saturday. It's not divided by weight, so I'm not worried about gaining or losing for the tourney. I'm just worried about having the energy to go through several fights, assuming I win the first one. -------------- I will never grow up, just old. Duct tape is like The Force. jonathan-Nothing wrong w/ defeat, I was able to learn from my mistakes and me and my trainer is starting all over for the next one, come the 17th I will showcase what was missing in the last one (hopefully)
I had a cold so I didnt really want to eat much of anything, but I tried to stick to my regular diet but added some hot tea and soup to try and bust the cold a bit, but other than that, Protein shake vegetables ground turkey in a salad chicken breast cod fruit shrimp No fruit after noon though... Keep it lean and fresh, No fruit though a few hours before the fight as the sugar seems to take charge to my stomach and doesnt do well when going down the stretch (bad cramps) Make sure you are full though and full of energy, The least bit of starvation will weaken your ability to take and dish out blows. |

Thanks, GG. My instructor told me, "Lots of spaghetti the night before." I said ok and thought to myself, "Hmmm... I doubt the FT guys would agree with that."
The sparring part of the competition won't start until after noon, and each match should only last a couple of minutes (first to 5 points goes on). Your diet looks much better that spaghetti. Congrats on your learning. I'm excited to hear your results on the 17th. -------------- I will never grow up, just old. Duct tape is like The Force. A lot of combat fighters eat pasta as a pre-fight meal, It is usually wheat pasta though....I dont think it is entirely bad eating going because it is fulfilling and it is packed with carbs that give you energy. (regular pasta I dont agree with) but I can see wheat being ok since carbs=energy but I dont abide by it.
I will be sure to give you the results win/lose/draw. |

Yeah. I haven't bought the wheat pasta, so I just avoid pasta altogether. I'll probably throw in some rice or something, but since I have to be there at 8am, I guess I'll just make sure to have eggs and turkey bacon for breakfast, along with a protein shake.
I think I broke my finger last night blocking a kick. That'll make the tournament interesting. LOL :( But I'll still kick butt in the Kata portion of the tourney. -------------- I will never grow up, just old. Duct tape is like The Force.
