My boyfriend and I were both on the Atkins diet for 10 solid months, virtually no cheating because we helped each other through the rough times. He lost 50lbs and is fabulous, I lost 2lbs and became very unhealthy. I don't know any women who have been successful on the Atkins diet, but I know they are out there. I highly recommend using the ft diet tracker and choosing a healthy lifestyle instead of Atkins.

My mother-in-law lost 40lbs doing Atkins, worked wonders for her and she found lots of ways to make it fun to eat w/o the carbs. i.e. melted string cheese and pepperoni when she craved pizza stuff like that. Personally I tried it and just couldn't kick the carbs long enough to really give the diet the full time to work. I think alot of it will depend on how well you cope w/o being able to have alot of carbs in your diet to begin with.

I can only think of one segment of the population that would benefit somewhat from the Atkins and that would be the extremely overweight(and then, that would only for a short period). Your asking for a lot of problems when you completely cut out a class of foods. You would be much better off eating a healthy, balanced diet that supports all of your diet and training goals.Good luck.

From what I understand about the Atkins Diet, from the book and from my mother-in-law, only the first few weeks are LOW on carbs, you are still required to eat some but in small quantities <20 week 1, 40 weeks 2-4, and gradually raise the amount> till you have lost you're goal amount of weight, then the diet says to add in good carbs till you find your balance for maintinance.

This is correct. Some folks have such misconceptions about the Atkins diet. One note, it is not a good "workout" diet. Usually very low energy. It is great from a purely weight standpoint, but remember, it is a diet. It works well for more obese folks, the first few weeks are tough. If you are a carb addict, this may not be for you. Diets in themselves are very hard to stay with forever, a lifestyle change is in order for lifelong progress and health.

I guess if you're looking for a fast fix, Atkin's is an option. Definitely not a permanent lifestyle though, which is where you should consider keeping your focus.

You're going to lose weight on it - but you'll lose what lean muscle you have (or are trying to get) too.. and muscle burns calories faster, so why not try to build up the muscle, burn the fat a little slower but in such a way that you are creating a new and more healthy you?

(I've used it with success in the past, but I found it didn't build good dietary habits. The quick fix is usually not the best remedy I guess is my point).

I went on the atkins diet my sophomore yea rin high school, I went from 275 to abotu 210 in about 4 or 5 months. However, this does not mean I was healthy, and besides that, after i went off of it i gained wight back up plus some. Low carb diets are ok, but elimmating carbs all together I don't think is Wise. When you cut carbs that far back, your body goes into starvation mode, and releases ketones to use engery,Your body doesn't just burn "fat" It will burn muscle as well as fat to make your body servive, Not to mention the diet is expensive and repetiive, You eat tons and tons of fat, wish in some don't hurt you, but tohers it will clog your arteries up. I mean think about it I can go on a diet of nothing but 3 candy bars a day and loose weight, after all thats only about 600 calories a day I'd lose weight, but am I Healthy? No........Eat right, stay active( cardio, weight trainging) and you will feel better, and be healthy.
Personally I would rather be 5lbs heavier and be healthy, than be 5lbs lighter and feel like shit all the time, but thats just me!

Look at the South Beach diet. I don't believe it is as restrictive carb-wise. Search for it on 'fit buddy' at the bottom of the page. Having said that, I agree with those above. A diet has to be something that can be lived with day in and day out and not to much of a hassle. In other words, lifestyle. Good luck with whatever you choose.

SBD is pretty good. Ive been doing it with some nice results. You stay strict for two wks but then incorporate the good carbs back into your eating. The main thing to remember is: In order to get your body healthy you MUST make a life change in your eating/working out and more importantly emotional thinking. I think from what Im experiencing we all get lazy and eat some things not so great for us at times. But for the most part once youve gotten the weight and muscle you worked for you really make a conscientious effort to stay on track. If you are considering the Atkins...maybe go SBD for the two wks and see what you think. Im enjoying it to be honest and keeping fit is making it worth any % of days I dont eat the things we all know arent so great!

Hey Chatitude,
I have been on the Atkins approach for a year. I have lost 50 pounds in that time. My cholestrol, blood sugars, heart rate and blood pressure ARE better than fine. It has worked for me.
I am now in the phase where you maintain the your body weight, which requires you to keep vigilant on the amount of carbs you consume. The book will guide you on how to achieve this. I have battled to track my carb intake and have had the odd period of weight spikes, but reverting back to the induction phase neutralises that in a 20 day stretch.

Pay attention to the book as it is a lifestyle change and IT does allow you to eventually alter your feeding patterns to those that are reccommended on the nutritional boards here at FT. And do remember the eating regimen is intended for people who ARE overweight to LOSE weight. As BB1 states it's not that great a diet for training, but it will get you down in size, which will ultimately allow you to train more efficiently.

Can Atkins help you lose weight (weight meaning water, fat, and muscle)? Yes, like any other low cal diet. That doesn't mean it's healthy.

The Atkins diet remains too low in carbs well into maintenance, regardless of how many carbs are being added back.

Shane 123,
I do disagree with you since the approach does not dictate how many carbs you add back, that is totally dependant on your metabolism, which differs amongst individuals. I am not sure if that is what you meant since your statement is ambiguous...how can an indefinite amount of carbs be too little or too much, doesn't make sence? I also disagree that it is a low CAL regimen, if any thing it clearly stipulates that watching CALORIES is not the issue, but CARBS. Not sure if you made a TYPO there?

I think the key is finding the lifestyle that you can maintain.

I had success on Atkins, but found I couldn't stick to it long-term. While I conquered the major carb addiction (breads and potatoes in particular) and can comfortably moderate them now, I simply couldn't restrict them as much as the diet required me to do. It served a purpose in my goals (lost 15 lbs), then I shifted into the plan here.

Ironically I am finding the same difficulty now keeping fat out of my diet. :(

You've got to find what works for you.

I'd like to see someone on Atkins eating 200+g of carbs.

The diet does not specifically encourage counting calories... but that does not make it so that calories aren't lowered.

"Ironically I am finding the same difficulty now keeping fat out of my diet."

Fat shouldn't be kept out of the diet any more than carbs should be.

I'd like to point out that many people use a 'modified' Atkins approach, where they add a lot of extra vegetables and other healthier carb sources and cut out the big culprits such as pasta, white bread, and french fries. Most people just starting to watch what they eat find they consume a MASSIVE amount of unhealthy carbs; and a low-carb diet to them is just a healthier balance of their macronutrients.

I'd also like to elaborate for you Shane, that in my healthy diet I watch my fat intake VERY closely, and while I take flax seed oil, cook with olive oil, and eat plenty of fish and nuts, I absolutely avoid fat from any other sources (some times more successfully than others.. which was the point of my statement).

To categorically deny any possibility of success with Atkins would be inaccurate. Rapid weight loss can occur, and long-term health deterioration can NOT be assumed automatic.

But to go into it as a permanent lifestyle takes ALOT of dedication, to a nutritional program that does not have the scientific support and physical results that the balanced diet recommended here, by professional bodybuilders, has.

If you're avoiding fats from other sources, you're in the minority amongst Atkins dieters.

We could certainly look upon Doc Atkins as the poster child for his own diet. The only way I could see someone's health improving on Atkins would be if they were seriously unhealthy to begin with.

You are right and it is true that the Atkins approach was devloped by a cardiologist to help unhealthy (obese) people lose weight and return to health. Nobody ever disagreed with that. I don't think that many people (particularly in this community) promote the Atkins as a suitable diet for healthy individuals in fact you'll find by trolling through the posts that it is argued at length, but for those of us who were previously FAT, the Atkins approach has been a wonderful remedy. The latter phases of the diet plan encourage normal eating habits, however with the discipline of excluding the fattening carbs in processed "junk" foods etc. As datdanigirl points out...

As far as I know Atkins lost his life by slipping on a patch of ice taking a fatal blow to the pip? Was he unhealthy at the time...I haven't a clue? You seem to be in the know, pray tell?

Hey Chat:
You may want to look into the Suzanne Somers diet....it's also low-carb except it incorporates whole grain carbs so you can eat whole wheat bread and cereal and brown rice etc. I find it is a good alternative and something I can actually stick to. She also has great recipies for ice cream, cheese cake etc. I just started it and have lost about 7lbs in a few weeks though I did cheat a couple of times!:)

I used to be fat. Wouldn't touch Atkins with a 10 foot pole, nonetheless. I firmly believe in balance and moderation.

Unfortunately, an autopsy was not done, arguably to protect the company. However, the medical examiner's report (regarding his history) noted obesity, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and myocardial infarction.

Sweet, then to start you'll need to learn to eat more then 1 meal a day.

I eat 5 meals a day and so should you or at lest 4.

Yeah I was rude, I really thought that was a joke you were making and I just wanted to add to it, SORRY :(

I have learned a lot here and so will you. I suggest you make your own post possible with a title like Serious Help Needed In Nutrient and the guru's will answer!

Hi litho....there is a post...recently made a sticky...in the nutrition forum titled diets made simple posted by bb1fit..good read for you I think.Atkins is impossible to maintain..and in my opinion not healthy...we all know butter and bacon and chicken skin is not good for you...the idea behind south beach is much more healthy and a similiar concept. But go ahead and read the post I told you about..get some better ideas..then come vack with more questions...and please...if you change nothing more...eat more than one meal in a day...

Atkins...in my opinion, just another semi retarded way to decrease calories....i.e....the omission of a food group. This is not a way of life, and ok for short term dieting.

thanks.. I have been reading through posts and many people say that on a healthy diet with excerise you dont loose weight as quickly. On atkins i personally can loose about 15-21 lbs a month. When i start a regular "normal" diet, how much weight can i loose a month? whats an average? thanks again guys..

Lithosphere - as you have experienced, you lose weight fast but it comes back on just about as fast, if not faster. Try to shoot for 2 to 2 1/2 lbs a week and you will stand a better chance of being successful.

:) You are one hard headed dude. Get rid of the idea that you need lots and lots of cardio. How many muscled marathon runners have you seen? Sure they are lean but there usually isn't a lot of muscle there (unless that's the look you want)

The one's with good amount of muscle are on steroids like Carl Lewis, I might be wrong on the name but I know there was 1 guy that won all the time and had a muscular look and years later we all learned he was on the JUICE!

Matter of fact I'm sure a few got metals stripped away from them!

Anyway my point is Mike is right and it happened to me, cardio kept me fat and boney looking and now even the bodybuilders tell me I look good and have a muscular look!

EAT, LIFT, EAT, REST and cardio as needed!

Well litho....you're on the right track....take EVERYTHING you think you know about diet and exersice and TOSS IT!!!!!Start simple...sign up for an FT program...there are pictures that tell you how to do each exercise...you can even print it and take it to the gym...It's my understanding you want to lose weight...and you weigh 150 correct??Start with say a 2000 cal diet(if you don't see weight loss in a week drop by a hundred cal a week until you see a loss)divide that by 6 and eat that many cal per meal...only eat startchy complex carbs like oats, potatoes and rice with 3 of those meals...keep your protien high eats lots of good fresh veggies...add some good fats...such as olive oil...and drink a ton of water...sleep 8 hours and do it again...no it's not as simple as it sounds...but is doeable.

****another side note(terribly sorry conan)...raiderfan...I was going to take your signature...I got it in email the other day...but I read it "one died for your soul....the other for your freedom"....

The trick if losing weight is your main goal is find any diet, by any name that you can 'live' with. All diets by any name do the same thing in one way or another, limit your calorie intake in some manner.

Ive been on atkins, its good kuz u eat and im a full fledged carnivore, but its terrible in terms of cholesterol. South beath was created my a cardiologist and ive been on that too, i prefer this one by far! but now im just at eating healthy (even tho my diet is apparently so-so in terms of fat loss)
