Today I spent the morning facing a demon. This particular demon took root Sunday night and has tortured me ever since.

But I stood strong in the face of temptation and have managed to fight off the lure of all the Taco Bells in the general vacinity.

At approximately 2:00 this afternoon I patroned a business located right beside the local chain and cussed myself silly for literally having to force myself to drive away in the opposite direction. But I did and it felt good.

I then turned around and went through the drive thru like a goddess on a dragon and I am now fat and happy with the fullness of two taco supremes complete with fire sauce.

The docotor once told me that stress triggers a drop in serotonin levels in the brain and leads to a craving for sweets and starches. So when you eat something that causes a sizeable spike in your insulin levels, (like two tacos) your serotonin levels quickly increase...thus making you feel better.

Is it horrible that I SOOOOO want to use this as an excuse for my behavior today?

hahahahahahhahaa... I am no doctor, so I couldn't tell ya, except that every now and again, a 'treat' or a small break is mentally healthy.... we all fall off the wagon, just get back on and give it that ol' college try in the gym... five minutes extra on the treadmill or whatever...!

I, however, am more of a KFC guy....

You're preaching to the choir here sister. When I go to Taco Bell I just eat til I run out of money. "Hey, I've got 47 cents left. What can I get for that?" No will power whatsoever. It just ain't there. Never has been, never will be. Pathetic I know but hey it's my monkey I'll carry him on my back if I want to. That is why I avoid that place like the plague. And Pizza Hut. And Wendy's. And Sonic. And Krystal. And Baskin Robbins. And....well you get the picture.

I'm with you carivan. I am pretty proud of myself though, I think I have only indulged 3 times since hubby left in Oct. And the first time was after I left him at the airport so it seemed justified. Krispy Kremes and Starbuck's White Chocolate Mocha are my personal demons. You are not alone dfly, I've been known to make a U-turn now and again

Well here in the great Island I am on I dont have to worry about fast food chains becuase they just arent here....having said that my demon has now moved from rice bowls from Jack in the Box and Chesseburger at McDonalds to beer........I am carb aware so I will have a Miller Lite please. Is it bad when you think to yourself....hey I could eat or have beer.....I know that if I leave my room I am drinking a beer or 2 or god knows how many on the weekends because it is a past time....nothing like laying in the sun with a bucket (6 beers) of beers working on your tan and taking in some liquid bread because you refuse to eat bread all week just to save it up for that one day...I am serioulsy not that bad here but it is hard for me to eat healthy because the choices are few here so alot of times it is tuna and chicken and if I am good I will reward myself with a pork chop............When I am in the states I crave Olive garden all the time and Arbys roast beef......I cant get enough.....my life here doenst allow the fast food so I have to make up for it somewhere:big_smile:

I don't think there has been a thing mentioned that I wouldn't love to eat on a daily basis. Well, maybe the cruise ships Charlie.:laugh:

I think it isn't so much that I am too rigid with myself, it lies more in that self control factor. I will have a whole weekend to cheat starting tomorrow, so the idea that I could not stave off the craving just basically pissed me off at myself, you know?

Being the kind of person that I am, I would love to know the mental componet (or lack thereof) to this. Why was it such a strong temptation? What made me give in? The taste? A hidden nutrient my body needed? Pure weakness?

Any food pychologists in the house?

I'm a psych. major, does that qualify? Let us not forget that the brain is not separate from the body, it runs the body. The body is a mass of chemicals and chemical reactions. I'm guessing that your brain needed whatever was in the Taco Bell stuff. And maybe it was just a comfort measure, but brains need love too.

I confess to having looked up the nutritional value of a chicken soft taco supreme.

In general I have developed an immunity to junk food. My cheats are big fat-soaked meals of prime rib or a gooey cheese sauced pasta; loads of butter on my veggies and a whole LOT of sour cream on just about anything...

.. like a chicken soft taco supreme..

An acquaintance was at Taco bell when they were getting their delivery. As boxes were coming out of the truck, he was able to read the side of the box.. Grade D Meat and then under it, it said "edible".
I don't know about you, but knowing that doesn't give me the cravings to eat there..
I can only guess that other fast food chains are similar, but that's just a guess..

Yeah, you just don't want to know, do you?
That is like when the mad cow scare was going on and they said maybe it was time to stop using the cows that couldn't wlak to the slaughterhouse on thier own...you don't know what kind of meat you are getting!
And for a while there was the rumor of kangaroo meat in Mcd's burgers, i don't know what ever came of that.
If you want an interesting read ion the fast food industry check out the book 'Fast Food Nation'.

Here's something that has helped me A LOT in contolling my cravings. I never carry any cash with me. I make sure that I don't need anything that requires cash for that day and then I head off to work cash free. I use my lack of funds to force myself to stay away from vending machines, restraunts, whatever that "feeds my cravings". It's worked well so far.

It's so funny to be reading this post, because my husband and I have been eating very healthily, and last weekend right after sitting down to a wonderful dinner with my mother, I blurt out "god..we haven't had Taco Bell in a long time, do you have any cash on you?" I think they put addictive drugs in the Chalupas so that if you don't have one for a while, you start to get cravings..then the shakes..then hallucinations....then you simply NEED to drive to Taco Bell and gorge yourself. Ahhh..Chalupa:big_smile:

Back when my wife and I were just dating we used to gorge on Taco Bell after going to the club. We were pigs.

Taco Bell is always good after a night out...I love a Chalupa myself when I am having a day (or night) off.

Ah the famous 'belly bombers' (White Castle) had a few of those, too! But my greatest cravings are homemade foods, mashed taters, chicken & dumplings, green beans, any kind of greens, mustard, collard, kale, eggs and more eggs, biscuts & gravey, cabbage rolls, etc. Fast foods? don't eat much of those, but of course the real biggest craving for me, PEPSI COLA, it's the tops!!

Hamburger Gravy and homemade biscuits.....ugh...I wish I didn't know how to make it because the fact that I do makes it that much more tempting.
