Ok, now this is a topic that is very important in lifting as well as just about every sport. Core strength is one of the deciding factors in success in a sport. So the point of this thread is to discuss the best core excercise, and how to do them.

i kno i posted this excercise in another forum, but here is an excercise that really works your abdominals as well as all of the surrounding muscles for stabilization.

You're right. It is vital to have a strong core for jumping. Many people don't know that (they think it's all in the calves or quads). And like you said it helps other lifts as well. Good post

My two cents regarding true "core" training (thanks gator):

See my posts under "Core" Training. I call "Core" Trunk. Core is a word used to describe the lifts that work 2 or more muscles over 2 or more joints. The fitness industry has stolen the word core to sell items used to train the trunk.

And, yes, a strong TRUNK is vital to athletic success!

Heres another good "trunk" excercise that Johnnie Morton strongly recommends (for those of you who dont know, Johnnie Morton is the wide reciever for the Detroit Lions)

Hold a medicine ball or weight plate with both hands out in front of your chest,
your arms slightly bent. Without moving your legs, rotate your torso 90 degrees to the right. (Don't go any farther-that would be too tough on your lower back.) Pause, then rotate back 180 degrees so you're facing left. Pause and rotate right to the starting position. That's one repetition. Work up to three sets of 20 or more repetitions, beginning and ending each set with the weight in the middle.

That is called a standing Russian Twist. Keep the medball chin high at all times too. Great exercise.

How about the hanging leg raise (no cheating) it works the entire flexor chain and can be modified to incorporate the rotational muscles of the core. The easier version without straps or the tower is performed on the ball with about a dozen variations to make it harder. This is a very good dynamic core exercise.
