How do you rate your sucesses? I would think that it is different for each of us. Some gauge it by how they look, others by weight loss/gained. Still others might look at it by the weight lifted(me LOL). The thing to remeber tht just like a workout routine can be and is usually different for each our personal achievments are not going to be exactly alike. I know why are you posting this mutt? Well I see people here and in my daily life that think they need to loose huge amounts of weight or starve to get the gains that they want. In reality as most of us know and deal with, this is a slow process. If we see a inch loss or a one lb of LBM gained we rave about it. Why cause we knoe exactly how hard we had to fight to get that little amount. There are those out there that loose gain what have you easily. To them I say good for you. For those like me I say take heart, if you really want it, have thrown out that get thin in 5 mins a day attitude, you will make it. If you expect to do this in a few weeks good luck, I will miss you. Those that are here in a year, well we will have a great deal to celebrate about. Do not give up even if you "fall off the wagon", get up dust yourself off and keep going I will, will you?

I think I measure my own success one day at a time. If I can pull myself away from the house for an hour a day to go to the gym and work as hard as I can, I feel I have succeeded. I simply know in my mind that I am doing the right thing for my body. It's common sense, eating right and excercise are good for the body in many, many ways. I don't need a number or a measurement to prove it. When I come home from the gym all tired and exhausted, it makes me feel that I've accomplished at least one good thing for myself that day.

Exactly RW!!! A good example is my vein issue. I remember the night I saw how many new veins were now there to see. I love watching the places that never had them suddenly have them come to the surface. For me that is a HUGE deal. So no matter what you see or accomplish it is a sucess!

LOL@RW - Yeah- I think it's a guy thing - I'm not all that fond of seeing my veins!

Re: Success measurement - I think as long as I move towards my goals with a strong and steady pace, I feel like I am achieving success. But...I have to admit that I think that far too much of the time I tend to want others approval &/or recognition to feel as if I've succeeded which can undermine my own interpretation of it. :(

I'll admit that I haven't seen the great progress that others have and it is a little frustrating, but everyday I do a little bit better. Right now I am feeling pretty good because, for the first time since I started my new eating plan on May 1, I got through the weekend sticking to my diet! That felt like a success to me. Weekends have been hard for me and I was pretty darn proud of myself.

the smallest successes are sometimes the best, cause we all know as humans that the little things eventually become so big in ourlives. Cheers Red, you are doing great and I will join you in the small success group. Although I am not at my best now, I can tell you the way I rate some of my sucesses are when I move up in weights, or am able to do a specific exercise I couldn't have performed a month ago. Body and weight measurements do come secondary to me, as long as I can feel my clothes fitting loser and a definition coming out, it motivates me more than I can say.

Nice post. Couldn't have been at a better time too. I tend to be very hard on myself. Personally, I feel like I have barely made any difference. It is very hard for someone to see improvements in themselves. :) We are our own worst critics. ;)

success, getting up, having breakfast, going to the gym, working out hard, protein drink, then having the rest of the day to what I need to do and completing all the tasks of the day, success. Losing 120 lbs, success, watching my daughter graduate this year, success. Getting back on track, success. liking what I see in the mirror, success. I could go on and on, I have alot of sucesses in the last few years and I can't rate them cause they all are special to me. And Victoria, it took me 4 years to loss all that weight and I do not have enough toes and fingers to count all the failures on the way to where I am now. You will get there, take it one day at a time. Congrats on your weekend accomplishment, it takes a great deal of will power to get through sometimes.

I gauge my health/fitness successes on (1) how loose the pants get, (2) the mirror, and (3) increases in lifted weight or reps. As an overweight guy, my gauge of success mostly focuses on my gut. Something I overlook, though, is strength gains. But the other night after a show I got an unexpected boost in the ego department and realized a new measure of success - for me, anyway.

We have a great crew that does the set up and tear down of all our equipment before and after the show. I decided to stay and help afterwards because I didn’t have anything pressing early the next day. Well, at one point, I lifted 2 speaker cabinets – one in each hand – and proceeded to carry them to the truck. I wanted to even out the load in each hand and be as efficient as possible in getting things done. Really, no big deal.

People stared. At me. Yes, me. They stopped talking and drinking, and actually stared at me. Every load that I carried from that point on. At first, I thought my fly was open. Finally, after a couple comments, I realized why they were staring. Man, I’m so not used to that! People don’t stare when you go from a size 42” pants to 38”, or when your spare tire drops from monster truck size to sedan size, but lift and carry 2 speaker cabinets at the same time, and man it was like a circus act. And you know what? I wasn’t even breathing heavy! And I certainly wasn’t trying to impress anyone – I know I could have carried much heavier. I just had a job to do and wanted to get it done.

At first I was embarrassed by the stares. But then they started to really make me feel good. A grin came across my face that remained most of the weekend. So, I guess I can gauge a bit of my success on people staring (for good reasons, of course!) To me, those stares were stares of accomplishment and were worth more to me than dropping another belt notch. And that is saying a lot, my friends. So now, I guess I have another personal gauge of success.
