Hey guys. I just got back from the store and I think I've got everything I need to get serious.

I picked up a 2lb tub of Precision Whey Protien so that I can start eating more smaller meals and still get all my protien. Does anyone have any comments on this particular brand?

I also picked up an 800 gram container of L-Glutamine (Free Form)... Any comments on this, or advice as to how to take it? The container says 5 grams each before and after the workout.

Got a case of Gatorade, as I had a buddy tell me it was more benificial than Powerade, which is what I had been drinking before. Comments?

Picked up a case of bonless skinless chicken breasts, turkey burgers (I checked the contents...looks good to me), canned tuna, canned chicken breast, brown rice, oatmeal and flax seeds. This gives me room for a fair bit of variety, although I'm pretty sure oatmeal with flax seeds mixed in (tastes pretty decent) will be my staple breakfast. Again, comments?

For my Carbs intake, I've also got apples and bananas, as these are some of the few fruits I actually like. Are there any others that are really good?

My gym routine is the 4 days a week doing the routine that FT has given me, as well as my variation on the 12-week abs probgram (I replaced seated twists with the side-to-side crunches..touch my right elbow to my left knee, alternate. Can't think of what its called...) with a good warmup and 25-30 minutes of cardio immediately after. The amount of cardio will be increasing as I become a better runner.

Any and all comments are welcome, advice doubly so.

Thanks for your input

Yo Sailor1029,

Overall, sounds good. Chicken, excellent! Flax, excellent!

I'm not the expert, but if you're looking for suggestions, I'd recommend the following:

(1) Drink lots of plain water over gatorade - Gatorade has too much sugar - unless they have a Nutrasweet version (just my 2 cents).
(2) Maybe add some low glycemic "green" carbs like broccoli, spinach, etc.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

TSMD

Scott, you're on the right track.

As for the glutamine, I would suggest 5 grams before and after your workout and again before bed. Also add 10 grams creatine after your workout.

Take in about 100 grams of protein from shakes, and another 100-150 grams from solid foods such as chicken breasts, tuna, turkey, lean ground meat, etc.

Good Luck!

Yet another $0.02 ...

I call your "touch my right elbow to my left knee, alternate. Can't think of what its called...) " bicycles. But I have nicknames for lots of exercises, so that might not be right.

TSMD had a good point about the leafy greens...I'd suggest a multi-vit too.

How's the running going?

I am taking a multi-vitamin every morning, as well as a couple Vitamin C pills..(the chewable ones...mmmmm)

The running is coming along nicely, I'm going as hard at it as I can. Run until I drop 4 days a week. My first run was 10 minutes at 5.5 MPH, second one was 12 minutes, then 14 minutes, then 16. Yesterday I started to feel sick as I had eaten before my workout, so I only ran about 10.

Yup, All sounds good, looks like my diet right now. I wouldn't sugguest gatorade though, unless you dont care about carbs from sugar. Althought the gatorade flavored water is pretty good!

What are your goals? are you trying to gain? Lose? If you are intending to gain, you may want to add some good complex carbs to this diet. It seems to be very lacking in things like broen rice, beans, sweet potatos. Also, as mentioned the the leafy greens for your later hours in the day for carbs that will keep insulin levels steady(fibrous). Gatorade can be beneficial through your workouts, but that is really about the only time I would make use of it except if you use it also immediately post workout for insulin purposes. I would not use it any other time. As for your mention of your "staple breakfast", oatmeal and flax is a good start, but you need to have a good helping of protein at this meal. Insulin levels are very sensitive in the morning, as well as going through many hours of catabolism while sleeping. I would maybe suggest some eggwhites and cottage cheese?? Arnold gave you good advice on the glutamine, except I would add an after workout dose to my post workout shake. Just some immediate observations. Good luck with it, not bad, pretty good choices. In the end though, you need to figure/know your maintenance calories so you can adjust them accordingly to meet your goals. Just having a good diet is not good enough if you want to make gains or losses. You have to adjust those amounts to make this happen.
