does anyone have an idea how long I should jog each day to feel some results (cardio-wise)? I am a beginner, but am not in totally bad shape. If I went for a 20 min jog, is that enough? that is what I have been doing as this is my first week, but I dont want to be wasting my time, do I need to up the minutes or is this ok? I dont live anywhere near a gym and this is my only source of any cardio activity. thanks for any feedback

No it's great (even 10 mins would have been good!) Don't worry too much about the time. When first starting training the most important thing is to DO it and being regular. When you get stronger then run for 30 mins then 45 then 60 mins......... Good luck!!

Temulent, I think its best to take it easy at first - if you go hell bent for leather you could end up injuring yourself since jogging is a high impact sport. I have terrible trouble with my shins so that's the first thing that comes to mind! Like Philia said, the important thing is to get out and get moving.

thanks guys, just wanted to make sure that getting up for a measley 15-20 min jog was worth my while, cause thats about the max time this girl can run :) do you have any suggestions for another cardio workout besides running? no gym access

Plenty of good low-impact videos out there - check your local library. It only takes a little space. Or even making up your own step routine in your living room - anything that gets your large muscle groups moving and your heart rate up is cardio! What about a rollerrink? Walking at a good pace is cardio - and easier on your joints, alternate walk, jog, sprint and it will make for a more interesting workout. if you don't mind the strange looks you might get mix in some skipping, hopping, anything you can think of - kids exercise all of the time without planning to, they just know that movement is fun. A jumprope is a nice, cheap investment - if you have the ceiling clearance you can do it indoors, if not, outside is good if the weather allows - just not on concrete! Once you think outside the bow your options for cardio are limitless - even if you can't get to the gym. People used to be in good shape before anyone ever considerd "working out", they just worked harder and moved more. Try doing some intervals of walk, run, jog, push-ups. upper body work is important too!

temulent, jogging is great!! as in weight training or any other exercise practice, you need to ease your way into it as jessica says and learn the proper way to perform it. try checking out runnersworld.com, they have great tips on the beginner jogger and there are tons of books out there as well. i have three of them myself when i was racing, i will look them up and give you the names. They were great and let me tell you, the pounds came off quickly!
good luck!
