I'm sick again. I use to only get sick once a year, maybe. In the past 10 months I've gotten sick at least 5 times. I'm begining to wonder if it's my gym. Anyone got any suggestions?

When did you take any time off? You can over do.

Do you take vitamins? If you train, your body does need the extra. Especially "C" And the gym DOES HAVE lots of germs. Wash the hands even b4 the shower! I used to get a cold every 2-3 mths.

I'm too lazy to over-train...I think. For the past 2 months I've made it to the gym about 4x a week unless I was sick and only made it in for my weight training sessions 2x a week. I always give myself minimum 1 day of rest per week. last month when I was sick I missed a whole week.
It's always they same thing too...sore throat :o

Are you getting enough sleep? I know that when I deprive myself of sleep I ALWAYS get sick....usually turns into bronchitis...icky stuff.
2004/01/29, 10:15 AM
I meant are you taking a week off every 6 to 9 weeks to rest? ....no training?

I agree with carivan, Taurie - Vitamins have helped me x 10. I was getting colds last year - never was one for catching them before this, but I think exercising can deplete your body of what you need to stay healthy. And hey - it can't hurt. And the hand washing thing to is important - especially at the gym!
Hope you feel better soon :)

I am in the same boat as you Taurie. I used to never get sick, but since I have started work its almost of monthly occurace. I think it may be from the people at work always coming in sick. Damn their eyes!

But also washing out your water bottle nightly is a good idea, but do it more so if you use the water bottle all day.

That sucks; Always wash your hands before and after you go anywhere, especialy after going 2 the gym, stay away from little kids, they r the worst for spreading germs, they bring them home from school. Keep your hands away from your face, and ears. Avoid indoor activities with large groups of people.

Thanks for all the responses. I do get adequate rest...at least 8 hrs; and always wash my hands but, I'm inconsitent with taking my multi. Last night I went to the health food store in my area and invested in Emergen-C (vitamin C, Bs and minerals) and some hand sanitizer. If this regimen doesn't work then it's time to start wearing a breathing mask to the gym and spraying all the gym equipment before I use it. Is that too weird?

Take care of that cold Taurie...nothing worse than getting sick all of the time. There are so many of my co-workers getting sick...I just tell them to keep their germs to themselves ;-)

Go with at least 1 gram of C everyday and when you feel something coming on, double up, also, add some zinc if you are going through a cold now.
Get better !

Zinc...it makes me feel nauseous. I'll make sure I take it with food. Thanks! You're right about Vit C. I use to take 1-3g a day when I first started working out. Come to think of it I didn't start getting sick until stopped taking it. I switched from taking the fizzy drinks to taking horse pills on account of saving $$$. Guess it's pays to spend more and use it then, to buy something that you conveniently forget to take.

I have had optical-analitis. Your optic nerve gets crossed with the rectal nerve and gives you a crappy outlook on life.

Hey, Taurie!
Charlie, I heard the best remedy for that problem is a big can of whoopass. Take one swift kick in the pants daily until outlook improves.
Taurie, you are exposed to a lot of germs, everywhere. Boosting your immunity with vitamins and such wil help, good nutrition, good sleep habits, hand sanitizer, they wil all help.
Make sure you are geting enough calories, also. Your body needs to be fully charged to fight off bugs.

Just to make everyone feel better - I can't get this out of my head - my sister's doctor told her that if someone sneezes or coughs (without covering their mouth/nose), the droplets hang in the air for fifteen to twenty minutes. Meaning that no matter what you do, you could be walking through someone else's hanging germ mist and get their cold.
YUCK!!!!!!
Oh, and stay out of those public hot tubs....

I'm first in line to whip Charlie's ass! Who's behind me?

Charlie, older people have better immune systems. They've gone through a lifetime of being exposed to germs therefore have more antibodies.

I'm still feeling a bit germie. Believe this is my 4th week...I've been staying away from the spa, won't go back to the gym until next Monday (hope that's okay), and I've been taking lots of vitamins in the morning and a few extra doses of Vit C throughout the day. Also, I sleep about 10hrs a night. I hope it's gone by the end of this week.

You need a number like I said.
You look and sound a little germy but I know it will pass.
Get well young un.

I'm a picky consumer. The multi vitamin I'm taking currently is the one a day by solgar. Solgar is pretty good as far as quality goes...they are also kosher which is a bonus. The best vitamins I have ever taken are food based ones by New Chapter and Super Nutrition but, you have to take 6 a day and they are really expensive which I know is worth the extra $$ but really, who the hell wants to take 6 horse pills a day! lol. I use to work as a nutritionist and companies gave me samples and samples of their vitamins...I tried all kinds from mid to high end vitamin brands. But for the money Solgar was pretty good and didn't upset my stomach.

What is your diet like? What about stress levels...work and home. My husband and I know when our diets are out of whack because that's when we get sick. Lots of healthy fruits and veggies good healthy proteins etc and consistent workouts help to boost the immune system!!
I hope you feel better!
