Any opinions on the upright row for building the shoulders? I am trying to use as many compound exercises as I can for awhile and this seems to fit the bill. However, it's not listed under the exercise resource section. I've also heard that it can be harmful.

Upright rows may be the best trap building exercise there is. At the very least, in the top 2 with heavy shrugs.

I also like it cause it picks up your lagging medial and posterior deltoids....those tend to get over looked by many...yet are key in the prevention of injury.

Thanks alot. When I work shoulders I do military presses, Barbell rows (rowing high to the neck area w/elbows out), upright rows, and heavy shrugs). I just wanted to cover all of the bases. Did that yesterday. Pretty sore today.

You may want to try for variation upright rows using the lower cable. Constant resistance this way, a great change.

I stand with a straight bar at just below my waist and lift to my chin, same way with the cables.

I like doing upright rows they are good for building shoulder definition and mass in the traps. I pile on the wait and stick to low reps 8, 6, 4, then the last couple of sets 1 or 2 reps or to failiure. Use a cheating motion by bouncing if you need to on the last couple of sets this will allow you load some extra weight on. Using heavy upright rows as a type of power excercise has worked best for me.

Wow! nickcowboy1...My body can't handle cheatin on this exercise...I tried cheat reps. on this one in the past, and the upright row seems to put the shoulders in a vulnerable position...I do reps between 6-10, but only slo-mo for me.

I know that cheating is used and I have done so at times. But this is not great advice. If you have to cheat to lift the weight all the time, then it is too heavy plain and simple. Even as you say to only do this on the last set or two is way to much if you lift like this all the time. The fact you have not pulled your back or popped a shoulder is amazing. I would say this that cheating once every month or so to shock that area is acceptable, but as a steady routine it is just asking for problems
