two dumb questions about jogging

I've been wondering this, and didn't find an answer in the search.

One, why is it that jogging/running burns more calories than walking the same distance? Is it because you need to use more force to propel yourself forward when running?

Two, why is it that jogging/running is much harder for me than using an elliptical machine with resistance? Logically it seems to me that added resistance should be harder, but when I run.. even if it's just on the treadmill, that's much more tough for me.

Sorry if these are really dumb!

hmmmmm....thats interesting...I can run...well jog at an easy pace on the treadmill for an hour...but put me on the elliptical and I'm toast in 10 min...so that I'm not sure...as for the running verus walking I think it's a matter of getting your heart rate up more...

so I guess we'll have to wait for a more scientific answer...so we wait.....

It takes more oxygen use to Jog and even more to run, this is why the harder you run the shorter you can go untill you need to recatch your breath!

I do both Eliptical and Treadmill and I can say there is no way on an eliptical you can create the oxygen use as hard or as quickly as on a treadmill, but the eliptical has a better toll on you body so you can go hard longer on it then a treadmill but not use up the oxygen use as quickly!

As far as the resistance goes on a Treadmill that to me is more muscle workout then cardio, this is why if you put the resistance to hard for you your legs get real sore and not like a runners sore but more like a leg press sore.

An Eliptical will work you legs good especially the gluts but it's not replacement or comparasince to weights at all!

Oh also the Treadmill creates and actuall forward movement which increase oxygen use as the treadmill don't, it's like running a track and running in place you can run hard in place longer then you could on a track because you don't have that against the wind fell forward momentum which increase oxygen use!

I hope I don't sound to stupid but it's what makes sence to me!

KC I would bet that your pace on the elliptical is much faster than on the treadmill, which would account for your lack of endurance on them, this indicates to me that you may not be pushing yourself hard enough on the treadmill, try 1-2 degree incline to somewhat simulate air resistance of an outdoor run.

There is nothing better for you cardio wise than running, the harder/longer you run the more oxygen you use the calories burned. Anytime you get your legs involved in an exercise your heart rate goes up. The elliptical was made for those recovering from injuries or whom couldn't run/jog any length of time. You pretty much only use your glutes and quads slightly with arms to a limited extent when on the elliptical. When jogging your entire leg, upper and lower, is now being more utilized as well as the glutes lower back, abs and shoulders/chest to a certain extent depending on how fast/hard you run.

i justed started running and noticed my sides over my lower ribs feel badly bruised. i can only attribute this to the up and down muscle jarring from when i run, but i've never heard of anyone else having that sort of soreness after running.

adalos...sounds like you're working your abs, hence the soreness.

With running you're also using the bigger muscles more with the pounding. Try doing regular squats and then do some jump squats...you'll feel the difference in both your muscles and your heartrate. I also find a big difference in running on the treadmill vs running outdoors. The treadmills easier because it keeps a steady pace, there is more stress absorption and you don't have wind to contend with...but it's soo much nicer running outdoors!

Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.
