Hey all! Just wanted to yell out my most recent acomplishment. I usually do my cardio before my lifting, and 80% of the time I use a running/walking machine. My usual warmup is a 2 mile run with ups and downs over a 20 minute period. I'm usually quite exhausted after that.. but as I've posted many times before, all too often I let my mind play tricks on me. Well, today was the day I decided to push myself and see what I could do. I did 5 miles today, at a slightly slower pace, but still with ups/downs. Aside from a little pull in my right groin area I was still going strong too! Yipee! Even managed to get a little lifting in afterwards, but not quite my usual amount. =) Just wanted to share my joy!
Oh, and on another note.. I've never mentioned that I've got a SHAMEFUL habit. I smoke. Ok ok.. yell at me.. you've got every right! Well.. before hitting the gym tonight I went to the store and bought some nicotine patches. I've got 3 butts left, and that's it for me! FINITO! Au Revoir! DONE! BYE BYE! I've been smoking at least a pack a day for the last 11 years. I could never bring myself to tell you guys, because I knew you'd KILL me! (rightfully so) Well wish me luck! I'll keep you posted on how it goes. ROAR!! IT'S A NEW DAY LADIES AND GENTS! -------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

Drio, Drio, Drio...
First, major kudos sent your way for the 5 mile run. Fantastic job! Keep up the great work! Now then, did I hear you correctly? Did you say the nasty "S" word? Here, on the FT site?! SHAME! No preachin' here, buddy, (well maybe a little just for the heck of it), but I lost a grandfather to emphysema and my mother was recently diagnosed with it. After probably 40 years or more of smoking, she needs almost hourly treatments and has major difficulty breathing. Of course she can no longer smoke, but the damage is already done. You are doing the right thing and I can't applaud you enough for your effort. And remember that you're not doing the right thing just for you -- you're doing the right thing for your loved ones, friends, and family, too. You have to do this, man! If you ever get the urge to light one up again, post a note here first. There are many supportive people here who will help you through difficult times. The smoking thing somehow passed me by, but I have had lots of other weak moments. Everyone here has helped me so much - and we'll help you if you want us to or need us to. Take care and be strong! I smoked for years w/ one three year quit (daughter born/breastfeeding etc) and finally quit in January for good. You won't believe how well you'll do w/ the cardio after you quit. That was plenty motivating for me. Once you get through the first few weeks you won't believe how much better you'll feel.
Just my theory but I quit cold turkey. IMO the nicotine patches, gum, etc, just prolong the pain. Not smoking isn't what makes you smoke - nicotine makes you smoke. Withdrawal as the nicotine leaves your body. If you quit cold turkey, once the nic leaves your body it's over, finito! But if you use patches or gum you're keeping yourself in a state of nicotine withdrawal. My mom quit w/ the gum and got stuck chewing nicotine gum for several years. LOL At least it was better than smoking! Anyway, if you use the patch just stick strictly to the schedule on the box and you should be fine. And you really, really will notice a difference w/ your cardio. I got addicted to cardio after I quit smoking. It was such a rush being able to breathe. I started when I was fifteen; just turned thirty last weekend so I smoked for quite a few years. |

*TWITCH TWITCH* I'm ok... I'm gonna make it! =) So far so good. I got the stage II patch.. which is slightly weaker than the program prescribes.. so I'm still feeling a bit of withdrawal. But I have quit cold-turkey before, back when I was at 2 packs a day! I actually quit for 4 months.. then screwed it all up at a party one night. I'm not planning on using these patches forever.. just wanted a little help for the first 2 weeks. It really is helping take some of the edge off.
Ashunboy.. I hope you quit man.. it's such a horrible addiction. Thanks for the support everyone! PS did I mention I RAN 5 MILES!?!?! (heh I knew I should have posted these separatly) -------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

No, you're definitly right there RW. I should switch them around. It's basically become just habit to do my cardio first. (usually I don't push too hard.. just about 20 minutes) Last night I was just feeling a little wild and crazy) Starting next week I'm going to follow my routine from this site. I've basically be doing a rather unstructured workout. (working HARD.. but not structured) I'll be sure to post my progress on both fronts.-------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

DRIO, congrats to you on your accomplishment in the gym, and even moreso on quittin smoking! That is awesome! Probably one of the hardest things in life if you ever smoked. Keep it going...we are all behind you.

Bravo Drio. 5 miles in the gym......Keep it up, now that your quitting the habit it will get even better. When I first started training 2 years ago I was a smoker but quit after 2 months of training. I also used the patch but only for 3 days. Make sure you wear it while you sleep, so you don't have the urge when you wake up. If you need help let me know. Again congrats on a REALLY NEW lifestyle.-------------- You can walk to anywhere you want, it only takes time. Ivan Montreal Canada (aka SpongeBob Square Pants to some!) |

I too was a smoker. When I finally quit 12 years ago I was smoking about 2 1/2 packs a day. Ran out during the Gulg War. It was tough but after the 1st week I knew I had it made. All you have to do is want to quit and everything else will fall into place. Oh...I put on 40 pounds in 5 years. Good luck and I know you can do it.

Keep it up Drio, the first few days are tough! After this you can survive anything so the rest will be a piece of cake. Don't know if you've found Quitnet but that's a good resource, with message boards, etc. It's either quitnet.com or quitnet.org.
Don't worry about the weight gain either; I imagine it took more that not smoking to gain 40 lbs in five years, right Dhahn? The first week I really allowed myself to go nuts, binge on chips, whatever it took to not smoke. If that meant raid the cabinets all day, so be it. I was determined not to smoke. I did gain a few pounds but I didn't smoke and once I got back to my regular habits it came off no problem. Obviously your an active guy and once you can breathe again you're going to be even more active, so I wouldn't worry at all about weight. Good luck - actually I won't say good luck since luck really has nothing to do with it; determination is the key! Take care! |

Congrats on your run, Drio. hehe I quit smoking because someone said I couldn't do it cold turkey period, patch or no. I sure showed them. That was almost three years ago. So along those lines, look at kicking the habit like a challenge. We all love beating challenges right? You can do it! Good luck!-------------- Inside of me there is fit, strong man screaming to get out... he should not have been standing so close to the buffet line. |

Yeeehaw! Day two! Going strong here. The patch is certianly helping out alot, even though it's the weaker stage 2 version. It's actually very surprising that it's controling my urge. I woke this morning, expecting to be really wanting one, since I had my patch on for 24 hours... but nope.. no sweat! Thanks a million for all the support gang! I'm looking very forward to the day where it's just a distant memory!
I've got some tea tree oil chewing sticks which are helping me through the oral fixation. I love em. I know I need to quit for myself. But you know, now that I've told you guys about this, I REALLY need to carry through or I'll feel like a big ol shmuck! Never hurts to have a little extra motivation. Thanks again guys & girls! -------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

My husband used the patch to help him and it really worked. I, thank goodness, never got hung up in the smoking thing! Keep up with the excellent exercise and work through the smoking thing.-------------- Gramma |

Just checking in.. I think it's day 4. Still going strong gang. Actually went a good portion of yesterday without a patch. (it fell off due to excessive sweating at the gym) =) I did quit for 4 months "cold turkey" about 4 years ago. For some reason I'm having a MUCH easier time quitting now, than I did then. Hope everyone's having a dandy weekend.-------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

That's great! This last time was much easier for me, too - probably because I wanted to quit so bad. I just hated smoking. Congrats for sticking it out.

Maybe it's easier because of your healthy regimen. Either way it sounds like you are conquering the bad habit. Keep up the good work.-------------- ~Victoria~ ...Some things have to be believed to be seen! |

Keep up the good work DRIO. You have to be REALLY careful about going out drinking though. Once you make that one exception, and just have a drag of a friends cig. it's all over. Trust me, I've quit four times.

Progress Report: Still hanging in there. Though I must confess.. I did have 2 smokes a couple days ago.. had an old friend over.. couple beers.. he's a smoker.. I caved in. But I haven't fallen off the wagon completely. It's amazing how long the withdrawl effects linger. Grrrrr!
Good lord stay away from cigarettes people! (preaches to the choir) I don't think I've ever regreted something as much as smoking. -------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

Hey there gang. Just checking in. Sorry I haven't been around as of late. Life's just been crazy! I've fallen off the wagon and gotten back on as far as the smoking goes. I haven't been getting to my gym as often as I like.. but I have gotten more serious with my running. It's gotten addictive! (I've finally gotten myself running outside instead of the gym tred machines) Anyhow... I'm still kicking! Hope everyone is well!
ps I finally got some more pics up in my profile. -------------- Dont wait! Procrastinate NOW! =) |

Glad you're back, but what's this about smoking? Best get back on the wagon and fast. Don't know how people who run can smoke.-------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |
