My gym doesn't have a squat cage. It has 2 smith mashines, and for my first round of FT I used that, as it told me to do.
This second round of FT I do barbell squats instead. My gym has a squat rack that os mostly used to hold the bars for people doing curls and such. I asked one of the trainers about it, because I thought it was broken. He showed me how he uses a dumbell to get it loose so the hight can be adjusted and so on. It's pretty beat up.
I now squat (deep) 40 kg for 7 reps on my 4th set. It's pretty good I guess, but I know I can do more, I just don't dare do it on my own. I don't work out with anyone, and I don't want to ask any of the guys at the gym for help, because they are always buzy. If they notice me, I think they think I'm OK, because I always ask if the equipment is free, or wait until they are finished with their sets, and always put htings back afterwards. I believe they think I'm serious about it, if they think about me at all.
When I normally work out, there is just one trainer that I know of around, and he is buzy in the reception, and sometimes show a newbe what routines to do. I doupt he has time to spot anyone.

What can I do to make my squating safer as the weight I use goes up? I'm pretty sure I can do 40kg for 10 and I would love to try 50kg. Any ideas?

Well, I'd make sure to ask someone or the trainer.. he may be able to spare some time to help you out.

Don't feel afraid to ask someone for a spot. The general rule however, is don't ask someone if they don't look serious about their training, but also don't ask if they are really into it (ie avoiding eye contact, not moving from their station, etc)

If you dont have a spot, then just wait till you feel comfortable before doing that next rep. After a while, you will get a good feel for which reps you have and which you don't. Next week, if you feel good after the first 7 reps, try for an 8th or 9th... Progress only when you know you can do it.

And 40kg for deep squats is great. Good progress.
