I was thinking about taking self defense classes, but the thing I don't like about them is that they either spend too much time practicing "forms" (anyone familiar with how most martial arts are taught know what I'm talking about), teach weak defenses like yellow belt karate moves, or charge way too much money especially in a major city like I live because the rent is ridiculous and the instructors are often more greedy than talented.

So then I started thinking about maybe getting some tapes to teach me. I've read of a couple of tapes that seem iteresting but expensive. Anyone know a site where I can run by the possibilities and people would know if this was a waste of cash?

If you're serious about self defense a true marial arts club is the way to go. I know the focus on form can seem a little dull but it's like learning to ride a bike, you have to start with the basics. The trainers who move students too quickly to the practical combat techniques often end up with a lot of injured students. Do a local search of clubs. I have NEVER encountered a club that wouldn't let you sit in and at least watch a class. Many will even allow you to participate to see if you enjoy interacting with the instructors. Don't get put off by having to learn good form. It's all about the end result!

I agree with artemis...The various forms for each belt level in the classes I take incorporate all the various moves learnt at that level...they look fluid and dance like but really you are doing various blocks and strikes and stances....what helped me was one of the instructors would come at me with various attacks and I was to continue through the form ...showing me how each move worked.
Every martial art is different to some focus on strikes/kicks some on direction, some on pressure points etc...and some combine all aspects look around and do some research...the best was to learn is not through a book but in class.

actually i agree with Chulla... when Adrenaline kicks in your body gets limited to very basic and direct movements, no intricate blocks and technicalities, it's all in just straight kicks, round kicks, straight punches, round punches. And that's the pure truth. Under the random and erratic nature of street fights often your adrenaline will be sky rocketing and your ability to think and perform the complex and often exaggerated motions that martial arts preaches is almost non-existant, hence why Mu Thai Kickboxing annihalated all those chinese and japanese martial arts in the tournament they held a few years back (Discovery channel documented it).

The fact of the matter is that in a controlled environment where these martial artists feel safe, and know they have a backup that the fight will be stopped if it gets nasty, often they perform realy well, but on the street there no longer is this buffer to lean on, and thats when they get their asses handed to them.

Also note that bruce Lee himself wasn't a fan of the extravagant martial art movements, he even claimed that the fight scenes he did in his movies are nothing like he'd fight in real life, they were purely for popular appeal. And if you look at his real life style, it's all straight down the line punches and kicks...

Martial arts have become more of a show off instrument rather than a true self defence method, which is why if you are in it for the latter, Kickboxing or boxing will be far more beneficial, and in less time. But everyone to his own, if you do martial arts just as a means of something to dedicate yourself to, so be it, but don't expect it to win you fights on the street.

dookz - I know where you're coming from but I should have expanded more on my previous post.

I wasn't talking about the extravagant kata movements. I was referring to combat training which is quite refined from the exagerated kata movements. And despite Bruce Lee's showy movements while on-screen he'd still be using martial arts techniques if it was a real fight. I was also thinking more about how your subconscious will resort to what you know and practice but that would be regardless of what your choice of fighting techniques were. If you are skilled with any fighting form you're response to adrenaline is not the same. But it takes a lot of time and training to get to that level.
As far as martial arts specifically, it really depends on what club you choose. Yes, there area a lot of practices that are based on the flowing movememnts and exagerated stances, but there are a lot of clubs around now that focus on combat techniques because that's what people are looking for. You get what you look for in a club these days, you just have to do your homework.
Whether you choose boxing or kick boxing over a martial arts form does not necessarily improve your odds of winning a fight. It's more dependant upon experience and practice than anything else.

I was thinking about maybe JuJitsu or Boxing. Jujitsu has a lot of rolling around with guys on you all sweaty though. Boxing on the other hand is less effective as it's just strikes. I know jujitsu is expensive. What about learning to box?

learning to box is cheaper, need to get the equipments though. Boxing is also easy to learn but very hard to master, alot of the moves seem very basic but when performing them in a real fight it comes down to how many times you've performed those moves correctly in training. A grappling technique is also very useful. Id stay away from arts like taek kwon do, some karate schools has modernised and not so traditional now.

Jeet kun do also pretty useful as its alot more direct than others, not a style but you can learn from it. Not the original JKD bruce used but nevertheless, still alot more practical than others out there.

Yeah, I'm not going near karate or even many of the kicking centered defenses because I've been told they are weak when it comes to self defense.
I know boxing is severley flawed as well, but as you say it may be the easiest to master. How do I learn to box? I have a heavybag (100 lbs. is that good) and gloves already.
I've also heard that jujitsu and muay thai are good, but kickboxing seems too form centered to be effective in street defense unless I truly mastered it and jujitsu is effective, but I'm not sure how easy it is to learn, as I basically need a partner to grapple with in order to practice, right?

Most martial arts .. to me anywyas is "cool" only in the movies.......movies make it look like your just a mjor bad ass if you have a black belt or somthing......... I'd say about 20% of that stuff is actually useable in real life.

Boxing and wrestling type things we be best for real life......boxing for hand to hand.....wrestling for close combate...

Be the best self defense is not to get in what ever situation it is. Somone wants to fight you, walk away....who cares?

Ha.. are you kidding? Walk away, sounds easy doesn't it? but in this land of pussies who act tough the minute you walk away they jump all over you. First of all you should try and talk about what the problem is, if he interrupts you and gets more aggressive, don't wait for another opportunity and commit to punching his face in, truth of the world. I've experienced numerous scenarios and tried walking away and got into an even worse situation. Sometimes you just can't avoid it

Walking away is the ADULT thing to do........more than likly your a type 1 personality....I'm nto saying tunr your back and walk away....walk away safly face them if you like.......but fighting is stupid.

Let peopel think what they wanan think, I don't care...all thorough life......theres gonna be people liek that, that will talk crap behind your back. Beating them up won't change a thing except start a fued. oR get their friends involved. PLus you never know if they are carring agun, or knief........

Some peopel will "win" at any costs.......thats means sliting your throat....so be it.........the safest and most logical thing to do? Walk away.......you may be labled a "pussy" but atleast you still have a throat.

Yes, but my point is that i don't care that i'll be labelled a pussy, it's not about that at all, and as a whole i completely agree with what your saying.. But what i'm saying is that more often than not, walking away will actualy get you f*'d up more (physical wise). I've seen it countless times, and it's because normally the aggressor is realy a scared little poofter on the inside, so the minute he see's that you are hesitant/want to walk away thats when it always happens. Now i'm not simply talking out of my ass here, i've seen this situation happen countless times, and even to me. I have ALSO seen a situation where numerous guys were teaming up on this one kid, he didnt stand a chance, but he didn't back down.. infact he was getting more aggressive than all of them and he got away by simply intimidating the others and fisting one of them, that made the others think didn't it?
In an ideal world, by all means walk away, being labelled a pussy means nothing. But when it seems that your cornered into it, it's time to drop the back off mentality and go the opposite way... the agressive way.

Note, if your ever surrounded and can't run, the WORST thing you can do is try to walk away or somehow sneak out of it, because the stupid mob-mentality combined with them noticing ur hesitation is how people get messed up... THats what happens down my end, i guess it's lucky for me i have a street-smart friend that has shown me real life examples of how to deal with things.

well the best senerio for this situation......don't get in it? simple as that.........some guy wants to start shit with you with his friends avoid it..........and yes you CAN run.........and if its a huge "mob" like you say....your screwed anyway.......all you can do is just pray you can walk away

********

First of all you should try and talk about what the problem is, if he interrupts you and gets more aggressive, **don't wait for another opportunity and commit to punching his face in*** quoting from dookz

thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard of........and that attitude like that, would be the reasonyou get beat up.

You CAN walk away from any situation, its just a matter of finding the way to do so.

As far as I see it....street fighting is more to the point with no rules....martial arts help with fundamental techniques and being nimble on your feet...however a lot of it is unusable(most of the kicks, etc)...I would say a little of boxing, a little of submission moves(if it's 1 on 1) and little bit of unmedicated mike tyson is what it takes...plus knowing a bit of key spots to hit to incapacitate the person...I mean kicking another guy in the jewels is not exactly nice..but if your back is against the wall...and u got no choice...so be it...

I have always found a way to avoid a fight up to now...whether it was to walk or run away, or to create a tough image so noone picked on me.....who gives a crap about looking badass....just act humble and don't look for crap....I know guys who say that some1 always starts stuff with them...but what they don't realize is that they have horrible temper and get pissed at the slightest of things and offer to step outside in like 5 seconds....

Yeah, that sounds like a good balance, menace. I've been lucky enough to avoid trouble too, but as I get older, as absurd as it seems, I seem to see more opportunities. I always thought once you reached college-age fights and stuff were rare as maturity has set in, but apparently either I was wrong or we live in a real immature society.

regardless, I just don't want to be caught with my pants OFF. I figure if I have some training or familiarity with self defense, i may still get caught with my pants DOWN, but at least I'll have a better chance of pulling them up.

Yes, I just made an analogy using pants. I'm proud.

Look into Krav Maga, it is definently the best martial art for self defense. Others like Muay Thai, Taekwondo, and Judo are more sport oriented. Kung Fu takes a decade or two to become any good, Hapkido and Aikido are way way too spiritually and philospically oriented. Krav Maga is what is taught to the Israeli army, and making it's way into other militaries across the world. It is used by countless law enforcement agencies because of it's street usefulness. The whole idea behind it is taking down your oppenent as quickly as possible. There are no fancy techniques, it's just about having your enemy down with as little fuss required. It takes into account firearms, 3rd years I believe learn techniques for disarming an armed oppenent. The weaponry they teach to use is not traditional Asian styled weapons rather every day items you could find near you like a chair.

I would take it but unfortunetly where I live the only place that offers it just gives a watered down version for soccer moms... not exactly what I was looking for.

If in a decently sized city look into it.

andrew i agree with ya 99% but u said boxing and wrestling are best for real life fights which i agree totally but i dont think other things like kung fu and karatee and so should be overlooked so easily. fighting is alot about technique.. what good is someone in a fight with a snapped knee cap, or busted elbow? you dont need anymore then 15-30 pounds of pressure to snap something serious and major in a fight...although in all and all, dookz if your saying the power of the mind over someone is greater i also agree with ya, but if and where possible you can AVOID a fight do so. and if you do walk away dont walk away making a "joke" out of that other person... fights from walking away would only occur when the other person is thought of being made as a joke, and without swallowing no pride with mixed emotions he will probably fight and do anyway anything possible to make you a"joke" in return
