do push ups actually build chest muscles or only tone it? can u like bulk up the chest by doing push ups only? maybe decline push ups to increase resistance?
ive done loads of push ups but i dont think it has really help build any muscle..i feel its all in vain..its just doesnt deliver as much as you think. there was a time i did 50 push ups every day but the chest didnt respond well. any thoughts?

heres the thing .. its not how many you can do.. its how many you can do after u feel you cant do any anymore. thats when u start building.

also.. if u want to stick to pushups.. put some weight in a back pack and put it on your back and do some push ups.

try to increase the weight and reps everytime u do pushups by 5.

if u do 50 today.. do 55 tomorrow.. etc..

also.. speed matters.. are u doing them fast or slow..

vary your speed and you will notice different results..

this is what they had us to do .. when i was in martial arts bootcamps.

yea well, i think push ups are rather boring though. i know adding weight will definitely build, but not sure if doing normal body weight will build any muscle. guess not. push ups create too much stress on my elbow joint.

to a point your chest will grow, but after that, you need to add resistance for continual growth. either you add some weight to yourself, or start doing some other form of chest training involving weights.

Just dont forget the key to mass = (low reps + high resistsnce). Adding wheight to your back is great but your only mimicing bench pressing so if you have the faccillity to use a bench go for that option. but if your just starting out pressups with back packs will do you fine just keep to about 10-12 reps though and try to use stands or bricks to lower the chest.

try decline push-ups with your feet on a bench.

If your elbows hurt you are doing something wrong.

Look up push-ups in fit buddy - lots of previous discussions on form and function.
