Has anyone tried the Slam Man or Century Bob punching dolls? Are they better than a regular punching bag?
Also, does anyoine know of any full length training dummies that you could practice ju jitsu moves on?

Bob is great to work punching and kicking for specific targets, but not so great for power. Also, I heard that there is a new Bob coming out that goes down to the knees. (I've only seen the one that goes to the waist.)

You can't really practice throws and wrist locks with Bob, since he has no arms, legs, or mobility.

Hope this helps...

I still think punching bags are overall the best tools when you want to practice. just hook it up and go crazy. Plus you get to develop at your own pace, develop a bit of your own technique. :)

Go with a heavy heavy heavy bag!....Their is no reason to hit a bag and have to chase after it, heavier the bag the more power you will possess!.....I have a slam man I paid 50 dollars for it and had to fill it with like 300 pounds of sand and you know what? I HATE IT!....When I hit the damn thing it just bounces around and moves all over the place it doesnt stay in one play...Maybe im hitting it to hard I dont know, but I shouldnt have to take a walk with a punching dummy when im exercising...Stay away from those unless you plan on pitty patting to hell. I know the hell out of that thing...Im donating it to my gym....Worthless piece of crap..

The new century bobs are from head to end of trunks.....I dont like them, slam man and century bob is crap...While they might look fun and for example the slam man while you are chasing the lights around hitting each one as they blink, it gets dull and boring and you will most likely find yourself scooting the thing back and forth back and forth across the room...Bah!

Again, it's all about what your goals are. If you simply want to develop power, go with a normal heavy bad. Make sure that it's heavy enough to not scoot around the room.

If you are wanting to practice tecnique, then a Bob or a friend would be prefered. Shoot! I practice most techniques to the ghost just for the muscle memory and simple memorization of moves. Then I go to the heavy bag to work power. I only use Bob in my Karate class, and not for the Ju Jitsu, more for combos and targetting.

Shadowboxing is a kick ass exercise to do if you can get into it...Just imagine yourself going against one of your favorite boxers and have a hell of a time...Great workout if done properly.

I like to use a sparring partner. Bags and Bob's don't hit back. Can't learn to take a hit with those. Not sure that's the best I break boards with my head so I may have a few screw's loose.

this is where i make an ass of myself, but when you do shadow boxing do you actually hit the wall, or just mimic the movement?

You just mimic that action. You could have a light behind you cast a shadow on the wall so that you have a visual concept of your opponent, but I wouldn't suggest hitting the wall. It costs too much to repair.

My brother-in-law is in class with me, so we get together sometimes to practice. However, we don't spar except in class. We practice our techniques, one-steps, locks, throws, Kata, etc.

My kids also both have been in karate (Blue belt and purple belt) and enjoy working the heavy bag with me. They also enjoy me teaching them more Kata, one-steps, self-defense, and "dirty tricks".

Again, don't actually hit the wall.

I have one of those very large, heavy red punching bag thingys (I am sooooo professional in my description, aren't I?), it hangs from the ceiling, I like it in that it takes a good hit and by swinging back a bit, I have to hit it harder to get it to go further.
I have thought about drawing a person on it but it would look too much like my husband and he would probably take it personally...

Whenever hitting any type of bag or dummy please use hand wraps even w/ gloves, I cant stress that enough they are over 20+ bones in the hand and they are so fragile...Take care of yourself when doing any exercises such as those, because one shot is all it takes the bag can swing at an angle your hand can land on it and break it easily...BE CAREFUL!

LOL I have a Century *Wavemaster?*. It's black and sits on the floor. It has a water-filled base, so I can change the weight of it. I have been working the power of my roundhouses so I can drop the big guys in one or two kicks. My goal is to knock the bag over with a step-through side kick or a spinning side kick. :)

You didn't look too bad. I'm sure you weren't the only wondering that. Actually, I don't like shadow boxing, even by myself. I feel like I look stupid fighting an invisible opponent. And I'm thinking, "What did I just block? He can't hit me!"

And yes! Definitely wear hand wraps, though I haven't found good ones yet, so I wear my biking gloves. They protect the knuckles (ligaments) and the little bones (Carpals and metacarpals). I've been through the carpal tunnel therapy. I'm not doing it again.

Everlast makes some good wrap they are made of cotton and cost about $3.99 for a pair at any sports store even champs sells them so you should have no problem...Mine are covered in blood and sweat and stink but they do the job, No pain at all since I started using these wraps.

I haven't been able to find any gloves or wraps anywhere in our vicinity, they have those big, red gloves, but when I use them it hurts my pinky finger that has been broke before, I have some cloth and wrap and it works well, I will have to go online and look, though.

Does the water base ones work real well, then? I like that you can adjust it.

I really like my water filled. It doesn't require being hung from the ceiling and all that hanging it entails. Also, I can move it to another location without much difficulty. If I were a boxer, I'd probably want a hanging bag, but alas, I am a Karate guy. I kick my bag also.

Also, you can adjust how much water is in the base (by emptying and refilling as desired) to allow for more or less "bounce". This is good if you want to practice fighting bigger guys (more water) or smaller guys (less water).

You hit that right on the head...If you plan on doing more punching go w/ hanging but if you plan on doing more kicking go w/ standing.

I do kicking with my bag, too, but it isn't easy!

I'm not going to fight anyone, I just pretend to, so far that's been working for me, lol!

I prefer to shadowbox in front of a mirror to make sure my balance is correct and my form is in check. Another good idea is to shadowbox on an unstable object such as a tire to improve your balance
