I keep getting conflicting answers. When exactly do I take my protein shake(s) and/or my creatine shake(s)? 30 minutes after working out? 1 hour after? In the morning?

jnellie, is that the protein AND the creatine? I think Iread somewhere that they shouldn't be taken at the same time, but this may be a false memory.

Also, I work out in the evening (my only time) So what then? I wouldn't want to take two servings that close together - after working out and again before bed.

protein shake try to take with in 20 min. of your work out. If you work out in the evening try one in the morning and then one after you work out. There was a study done that said students who had a protein shake for breakfast out performed the ones that had toast or cerial and they also retained more than the other students. As for the creatine I have no help to offer not familiar with it sorry.

I don't take creatine, but you can take it with your protein shake, as a matter of fact, some protein shakes have creatine in them already. You should take your protein and/or creatine within a half hour after your workout. I think protein shakes are convenient before bedtime because you can make one that is low in carbs, but if you are taking two a day, I think the only must is that you take one of those after working out.

BRETTO,
I take Creatine right after my workout in the locker room as a rule. The basics with Creatine is that it is efficently transported to the bloodstream and not metabolized in the G.I. tract where it would immediatly be turned into creatinine and useless to you. You can also take it right as you wake up on an empty stomach. Either way don't consume anything for 30 minutes after taking it to ensure its uptake to the bloodstream. Make sure you pre mix it and its totally dissolved, if you can see the powder in the water its going to be metabolized. As for protein I take it 30 minutes after the Creatine post workout or 45 minutes pre workout, but not both unless you want to seriously bulk up. Vanadyl is an Insulin mimic and is said to help in Creatine transport as well as Glycogen transport to muscle tissue instead of fat cells. I use it with my Creatine and have been getting very nice gains with very little discomfort from my injuries. These things have been working very well for me and I don't argue with gains. I have been using GNCs Mega Creatine, 5g creatine, 12g sugars, 12g carbs w/phosphates, its very cheap and comes in a fruit punch that doesn't gag you to death, the Vanadyl is dirt cheap too.

There is a 30-60 minute post workout "window" where proteins are assimilated up to 300% more efficently by the body. The time frame varies by the individual. When this efficency occurs the glycogen is transported to the muscle tissue and not stored, your muscle mass is increased at the same rate. Ain't freakin science wonderful? I would like to take this opportunity to thank Arnold the Shwartz for being such an excellent guinea pig all those years ago. "I'll Be Back"...lol

Protein should be taken right after your workout and you can also take in before bed with milk to help process slower, however you need to take it AFTER your workout. If I'm not mistaken creatine should be taken before your workout.

Creatine before or after work out, it's a question about the insulin spike. Please do a search in the nutrition forum, we've discussed that many times before.
