I was invited to a gym with a friend who had just recently became a member. He is a smaller guy and was intimidated by the other guys in the gym so he asked if I would like to go with him once. I had not been in a gym in a very long time so many things looked strange to me I had only used free weights and a small universal machine in high school. Long story short we picked a maching that seemed to do just about anything I could think of we were working our way around the machine doing different excercises. A few other people came over but didnt stay long, mostly just watched us which I thought was a little odd. I went to use the bench press someone came right over and told me I shouldnt saying it was bad for me after what I had been doing, again thought whats up I had been doing curls and flys and pull downs any way I disregarded his warning to find he was correct but not from what I had benn doing. I was on my fourth set I had just increased the weight and laid back down once again the same guy advised me to stop said I had been lucky so far. Once again I disregarded the warning and continued this time not so lucky I had not noticed the pin that holds the push bar had been removed, so on my 4th rep the bar cam out smacked me in the fore head I was a little daised and seeing stars for a second. I noticed several people were laughing I was a little pissed then one came over and by this time my friend was standing by my side asking if I was ok this other guy said sorry it was ment for my buddy that guys didnt like a weakling working in there gym. So at this point I was just going to leave with my buddy when the worning guy came over and said I should have listened to him and that it would have been my friend and not me with the lump on his head, well from this I will say only one thing the bump on my forhead will be gone before he breathes right again through his nose. Has any one seen this kind of sh*t at a gym?

Never heard of that before! I hope his nose is very messed up. That kind of play in every gym I have ever been in is not looked upon nicely at all. In fact most gyms go out of there way tomake it very user friendly for new people, after all that is why they are open...did you at least report it to the owners? I hope?

That's messed up.
a**holes is correct although I can think of a few others.
You'd think they'd know better. Everyone has to start on day one sometime.

There tends to be 2 kinda of gym. The fitness ones - all bright and spangly with studio's, polished wood floors, music, lots of machines and a free weight corner. These make everyone as welcome as possable because more people = more profit.

Then there's the "spit and sawdust" local type gyms - These tend to be run more as a club than for profit, pretty basic, tons of freeweights and machines and little else. This is where you usually find there's a problem if anywhere.

I guess it pays to try out a gym before you join.

I was training with a friend 4 years ago or so and went with him to a local gym. Rubber floor, no changing rooms, no music, few windows etc etc but very well equiped.

But the people were so unhelpfull, asking you to use another machine becuase you were messing up their set. Saying "wait mate, i'm going on that in a few mins" etc etc. We only went once =(

Bloody cheek! I don't have that problem any more ... I decked out and now train in my own home gym and don't have to worry about s**theads like the ones mentioned. Anyhow, I think you have good self control ... I would've done more than damaged a nose! Perhaps a kneecap or two???

BAD BAD BAD, it's one of the main reasons why i just can't face the gym. Silly pranks like that, people staring at you, aerobics instructors speaking on the PA specifically to 'anyone who's having probs keeping up' (namely me). I guess it's just an unfortunate part of the gym culture. Once 'those people' have their so-called perfect body they seem to forget that they started EXACTLY at the same point as the person their poking fun at!!

This is the type of thing that discourages me from joining a Gym. I am a raw beginner and would feel uncomfortable around gyms, never mind gyms with pricks like that! I have a bunch of crappy free weights at home and nothing else, but that is good enough for me(so far).

My brothers, I completely understand. But I think you can find assholes no matter where you go. I've been in both "types" of gyms - the fancy country club type which seem to attract less hardcore bodybuilders, but these are more expensive and people look at you funny if you grunt out that last rep. Then there's the "down and dirty" gym for more serious bodybuilders, the huge guys (and girls) are here. I've met super advanced lifters who love to pass their knowledge and experience on to beginners. You can really benefit from a gym experience like this one.
Maybe your buddy should march right back to that gym and show those motherf**kers he's not intimidated by a few "children" with ignorant ideas. You may find that most people, even the big dudes, have great respect for that kind of courage and will go out of their way to help you.
Or he might just get his ass kicked. It's really hard to say. :o)
Just kidding! lol

Also, it's a good idea to check any piece of equipment for saftey no matter what the situation.

I still stand behind what I said. Yes there are some people, that are scum at every gym and for that matter as Bretto said everywhere you go. But I have worked out in nice posh gyms to the stlye I am in now hardcore, and I have not seen anything like that. Do not be scared to go to any gym.

Thanks for all the comments. I personaly do not go to a gym not for any perticular reason just could not justify the cost when I can do most on my own. If I do join a gym perhaps in the winter it will deffinatly not be that one and Mutt as you mentioned to complain to the manager He is the one who now resembles a racoon, Myself I didnt even bruise but still a little sore with a bump. I feel bad for my friend he was very discouraged, but we got his money back from the gym and he purchased a few things to get him started and he his thinking about joining me at Karate. Someone mentioned my control thanks I felt pretty bad because I lost it a little even though the guy deserved it.

I remember when i used to go to WOW and this kid one time this kid kicked a basketball to my face...it just missed me, i was so disappointed. After that i stopped going to the gym, now i have a gym in my garage and listen to the music and lift as long as i want to. Nobody to look at me funny and nobody to stress about.

You are all welcome!!!! No I promise I wont make fun of you and I don't want anybody "out in the cold" or hurting himself in my gym either!!!
(Anyway, it's just a small gym so I don't even know if you'd all fit in there?!!!! Ahh maybe if we use the sauna and the steam room as well then it'll do -don't forget your bath suits!!! ;o)

Im only 16 and i used to have problems with this other kid who always would make fun of me but run away.. heh. he is the same age,but he only weighed about 165, and around 5'3, I showed him what a 230 6'2 kid could do, I chased him outside and beat the crap out of him infront of his friends, and they didnt bother jumping in :)

Dont get mad, get even!

Hmmmm dunno if it's a brilliant idea to "beat the crap out of him infront of his friends".......

Anyway, now it's done and he doesn't bother you anymore.
Maybe he was just jealous and actually just wanted to get in contact with you?......

Sometimes you just have to think smarter than anybody else (and don't waste your energy!)
