I keep hearing and reading that muscles need time to recover (up to 48 hours or more). So why is it that you see huge guys that train 5-6 days a week, sometimes twice a day. If they are not letting their muscles recover, why do they seem to be getting the biggest gains? Are they takin roids or something?

Yes, some of them are on the juice. You also have to consider that for a lot of these 'big guys', bodybuilding is their life. Everything they do revolves around getting huge. Many pros eat 6000+ calories during the off season. I can put away some food, but if I tried 6000 calories, I'd probably explode. The food intake and roids (if they are taking 'em) create an almost constant anabolic environment in the body. Thus, no overtraining. They still need rest, though. That's something that EVERYONE needs.

Then again, they are not training the same muscles everyday.

Carivan is absolutely right, I train 6 days out of 7. I workout different muscle groups each day for an hour or two.

Anyone taking anabolics will have for one a shorter recovery time than the natural bodybuilder. A person on AS can also go home and eat a snickers bar and a couple donuts and gain muscle(a little extreme exaggeration, but making a point), whereas the natural has to completely regulate their diet, eat tons of protein, eat every 3 hours, etc. for a chance of gaining. So therein lies your answer. Naturals need much more recovery time. Give the muscle 6 days rest if you can, even another probably won't hurt. Take your rest days. They are needed for proper recovery. You do not grow in the gym. It is just the stimulus.
