I'm interested in hearing from the over 40 group on how they feel their muscle development has progressed, or anyone else at FT who might have the answer to my question at the end of this message. I'm 47 and never lifted before. My wife and I started with EAS in April of 2001, and when we completed two 15 week programs moved to FT. I have for the most part improved my body, but can't seem to develop those abs and muscular defination of the younger group. The only supplement I take is creatine, and for the most part we eat right with an occasional meed to "pig out". Can I really get "cut" at 47 or is the best I can hope for good toning?

Jrowray, getting "cut" in the ab section is a matter of lowering your bodyfat and exercising. While I'm not yet over 40 (37 going on 38 soon), one of my goals is to develop and obtain washboard abs. Unfortunately, it is a myth to target fat loss in one specific area, so the only way to achieve this is to develop good dieting habits (low-fat consumption), continue with cardio (at least 3 times per week), maybe a fat-burner (as a supplement) and ab exercises. Have you tried the 12-week ab program here at ft? If not, maybe you should give it a try...

Good luck...

rpacheco, I am in the 9th week of the 12 week ab program. I am also in the 2nd week of my 2nd 8 week FT program. My abs have this little hint that they are progressing, but all too slow for me! Thanks for the input.

Yes you can get cut after 40. I am going on 41 my husband 44 and we are able to acheive this goal. Yes it isn't as easy it takes dedication to diet and exercise. I also find that supplements and sleep are more important than they used to be! Good Luck.

I'm glad that you maintain the drive and determination...the main ingredients to achieving your fitness goals. I hope to do the 12-week mass program in about a few months. I'm in my 6th week of the 8 week mass program. After the program, I want to start the lean-out (obtain definition) phase which should last a couple of months. Lowering overall bodyfat will bring out the washboard abs. Hope you achieve your goals as I hope to...

FWIW - I'm going on 52 and in the best shape of my life but I've worked out most of my adult life (except for two years down time from an auto accident). Probably the biggest comment I could make about your question was when you said "eat right with the occasional pig out". That can cost you a lot of training time.

I think "a cheat meal" once a week is a more appropriate approach.

well here I am @45. The abs are the last to be cut because that is the 1st place we tend to gain body fat and the oldest fat is the last to go. Keep up the clean foods. I have 1 cheat day per week (sunday). But at 45, I'm feeling better than ever. Your abs are already there, just get rid of the fat between the skin and the abs. Good luck

You don't say if you or your spouse suffer from any of the typical over 40 disease (thyroid, diabetes etc). These types of problems will also slow any gains that you make, depending upon your medications.

When I turned 40,I remember a guy telling me that would be the last good year of my life! I made up my mind then.....I am now 50, will be 51 this year, and getting ready to compete in another 2 competitions. We may be older guys, but as you all have shown, initiative and drive can go a long way. This bodybuilding is a lifestyle, not a game. Best of luck to all of you.

At 42, Ive learned that its just a tough thing. Best advice is like the old saying; "you are what you eat"
