I've noticed alot of the trainers at the gym are having their clients do some kind of "active rest" between sets. By active rest I mean walking around the gym, jumping rope, squats, pushups etc.-depending on their fitness level. I'm just curious as to why they would be doing this. I'm assuming it would help with muscle soreness afterwords similar to stretching, or is it to just keep the heartrate up. This seems to have become the norm at my gym, where 3 months ago they weren't doing it at all. A trainer once had me jump rope in between sets, I wasn't to thrilled with the prospect...women over 40 who've had kids, would understand why....Won't be doing that again!

Just wondering if anyone has any opinion on how active helps a workout session.

Very beneficial. It keeps the blood curculating evenly through all the vessels, which in turn helps the joints and muscles.
Always good to keep moving if you have to wait between sets, or exercises. Definatley will keep the HR up.

I use the water fountain trips as my active rest. Seriously, I walk to the water fountain between each and every set. It does not have to be much, the idea is not to kill yourself, just move a bit. You can guage your amount to your needs.
