HELP!

I am not particularly fat and unnatractive, but over the winter I let my body go alot, and I really need to get back into shape so I can mingle with the young healthy people. I have been exercising a bit recently, but I am unsure if what I am doing is the best possible exercises to do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hello there!
Follow the tone and weight loss program for 8 weeks, do some cardio 3-5 times weekly and follow a healthy diet....

That's the solution to your problem.

Good luck!!!

Ditto to that suggestion! In my opinion, it will all start with a sound diet...

Thanks guys, I'll try it!

By the way, Philia. I read in another post that you were a vegetarian, could you tell me how my diet looks?

Morning 8am: 2 soy burgers with a slice of cheese on wheat bread= 40 grams of protein, 17 grams of fat, 36 grams of carbs.

Lunch 12pm: can of vegetable soup with beans= 10 grams of protein, 4 grams of fat, 42 grams of carbs

glass of fruit juice= 26 grams of carbs

Dinner: 5pm: tofu or soy burger= 15 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat, 5-20 grams of carbs

can of green beans: 3 grams of protein, 12 grams of carbs

and lots of water

Thanks!

I know the question was not directed to me, but you should try to spread out your meals during the day. Try to eat around 5 small meals a day. Also, in order to give philia a better picture of you, you should fill out your profile. We don't know if you're a man/woman, arachnid or what. Get the point? =)

Muchos gracias, Anti.
I think that you're short on protein. 65 grams/day is low. You should be getting about 1 to 1.5 grams per pound. You could try one of the FT programs and they'll set up some nutrition guidelines for you also. Try to work your diet around that. In order to get more protein, you may want to look into buying some protein powder. If not protein powder, maybe try including egg whites (if you do eat eggs) and drinking skim milk.

Ok, that would mean 185 grams of protein a day...would this amount of protein make me fat if I weren't training as hard as I should, or is it good for me whether or not I am exercising? ie. rest days.

And this site recommends some 370 carbs a day! This seems like it could make me fat, no?

Thanks!

Okey you see the amount of protein on the package rite? BUT the prob with protein in soy (or beans) is that you are missing some very important amino acids for complete absorbtion.
For the moment your diet is lacking far behind.

You need to eat some brown rice (or other great grains) with your beans and soy. Be careful with the soy burgers since they are full of fat (yes, also the bad saturated one!!!!! Don't forget that when you fry a good mono or poly insaturated fat it easy turns into a very bad one....)

The glass of fruit juice you have in the middle of the day, gives you absolutely nothing. Take a real fruit and eat some (soy)yogurt and good bread next to.

You don't eat eggs? Absolutely great source of proteins.... What about protein shakes?

Well, I don't eat eggs unless they are cooked into something, they are gross to me! But I do take protein shakes semi-regularly, but I still don't get a gram per pound! Today I will try harder in getting all the protein I can, will this make me lose fat quicker?

Well, I don't know about making you lose fat quicker, but when you do lose that fat, you'll notice that instead of being thinner and kind of soft looking, you'll be smaller and more solid. 370 carbs a day, should not make you fat. Make sure you don't JUST follow the protein guidelines, follw them all and they will work best for you. On rest days you should take in the same amount of protein and fewer carbs, at least that's what Nina always says. =)

Wow! In just one week of shoulder exercises, my shoulders went from this /\ to this __!

I didn't think I'd see a difference so fast!

By the way, my FT program starts today! So I look forward to seeing even more of a difference!

hey i was also very out of shape though from the sound of it im alot younger than you all, but i know it might be ancient but my advice is its not all in the diet but in the calestetics maby u should lean more towards pull ups, chin ups, dips, push ups and others those usualy bring back that old definition hidden under a thin layer of flubber.

yeah tim is right bro, eggs are animals just not born yet so whats up with that

I think being a 'vegetarian' is just a broad term people use...many refer to themselves if they don't eat red meat, or eat just fish...or no meat of any sort.....eggs are a gray area...it comes from an animal just like milk...so it technically fits under a fairly strict vegetarian definition...

also doing push ups/pull ups/etc will do nothing to bring out 'definition' to one's body...that's a factor of nutrition/diet...to do that....you must cut calories as well as (fat/carbs)....as well as cardio....(unless you plan to consistantly do hours of push ups and such to make it into cardio routine of sort....which would create a negative daily caloric intake)

I once called myself a 'vegetarian.' It went like this: Hey, ice cream...there's no meat in that! Chips...no meat there! Mmmm...cake...no meat either!

Oh, and for the record I am particularly fat and unattractive.

umm... i just want to say something. Vegitarian is where you dont eat meat. Vegan is where you don't eat meat or the by products (like eggs, milk...).
and yes... fish is meat pultry is meat- so anyone that says they only eat fish isn't a vegitarian (even though I personally think no meat except fish is a very healthy diet).

Anti, you were saying 300+ carbs a day seemed like a lot. If you only eat 100 carbs a day (as your diet said) then your not going to have the energy to do a whole lot. The more carbs you eat the more exercise you will be capable of doing. I do agree with whom ever said you should eat 1.5 grams of protein per lb you weigh, that is what will help you gain muscle.

Spread your meals out more, you had it listed you only ate 3 a day, eat 5+ a day but make them small. I am trying to gain weight so I eat a fairly large meal every 2-3 hours. If your wanting to lose weight eat a small meal ever 2-3 hours. If you eat it all at 3 times, your going to have a lot harder time burning it all off. Also, try doing cardio right before you go to bed, this will help you burn off excess calories that you have gained through out the day and not used.

You didn't post how much water you drink, but try drinking atleast 1 gallon of water a day. ;) If you drink soft drinks then quit. My dad use to drink 4 liters of coke a day, he was 6 foot and weighed 230lbs. He quit drinking soft drinks and drank 1 gallon of water a day and now he's 200lbs. Ofcourse he did cardio along with all that, but it helped him out a lot.

Hope this helps, take care :).

Congrats on quitting smoking, definitly a positive step towards a healthier lifestyle. As far as loosing a bit of weight, visit the specific diet and nutrition forum and start reading, lots of great theads in there. Simply eating foods from the "grocery list for healthy eating" thread there will help alot. Good luck and welcome to FT!!!

Hi im 5ft7ish and weigh about 12stone. People say i dont look fat but i really do feel it. I eat as healthily as i can and rather balanced diet but i just cant really loose the weight. I have a medical, back problem so excercise is very hard and painful. Can anyone help? Im not trying to loose weight straight away but i think that if i do loose weight then not only will i look and feel better but it might take some strain of my back.

Take care of your back problem first - more important than your weight is your being able to function - focus on getting in plenty of fresh vegetables , whole ghrains and lean protein so you are supplying your body with the nutrients it needs to heal and recover.

Ask your doctor what exercises you can do without further injury to your back, and get started with mild exercise. Walking should be doable, or light swimming.

If you have had physical therapy for your back you should have a group of exercises to do to re-strengthen your back.

If you don't have back strengthening exercises, tell us what your injury is and maybe we can make some suggestions for exercises that would be safe.

No one here can replace the advice of your doctor, however. you should get their clearance before starting any routine.
