I have been doing this for about 8 months now and have seen some good gains but I want more. My main problem is that I get up at 5:00 to workout - usually within 30-40 min of getting up and I have to go to work pretty early (7:00am. My eating has been very poor to non-existant pre-workout. Are there things that I can eat with that quick of a turn around to help my gains or should I move my work-out to the evening when I get home from work? I would hate that because I do my cardio in the evenings.
I appreciate any help - I know there have been similar posts to this but I haven't been able to find specific answers to this problem

Don't know if this helps but a small shake of eggwhites, oatmeal, milk and or protein might be easy to tolerate. You just need a small amount of good carbs and protein to get you through it. Meal replacements would work too. Maybee drinking somthing nutritious would be easier than trying to eat.

Charlie makes an excellent point. Your pre workout nutrition is very important to your gains, in fact if it is not correct, your post workout nutrition will suffer. Your pre workout nutrition has to fit your needs though. In your case, and for folks who work out right after getting up with very little time, a "liquid" meal is your ticket. I would suggest to you some whey protein, quick oats(fairly high glycemic, so will digest quicker and help get you first off out of a catabolic state and the nutrition will aid your workout). You can mix/blend this up at night before bed, and put it in the fridge. In the morning, first thing chug it down, wash up, etc., 30 min. and you are ready for your workout.

I generally drink a protein shake with water and eat a serving of brown rice prepared the night before. Or you can also try oatmeal, peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat, or many other good complex carb choices. The shake charlie mentioned is good, I just don't like oatmeal myself .

i dont like oats as well but I blend it in the blender and it makes it easier to take it down

When the oats hit the blender you never kniw they're there. Blend the dry stuff first and shake the blender. Limitless possibilities.

The main idea may have been missed, it is to use in this case Quick oats due to the higher glycemic value. I would not use regular oats in this case.(when time is very short). The reasons are in my post above.

If I'm working out first thing, I go for high GI carbs and avoid fats/protein(except whey), otherwise you've finished your workout before the energy ever hits your bloodstream.

I think I need clarification.. are quick oats the 'instant' oatmeal vs. rolled oats?

How do you get the oats to blend? I'm one of those types who doesn't like pulp in his orange juice, or nuts in his icecream. I can't stand anything outside of creamy or liquidy. I'd love to use oats as it would be a lot easier than trying to cram down brown rice every morning.

Blend the dry stuff first like I said above ......oats, protein, splenda etc. Blend at hi speed while occasionally shaking the blender. Then add milk, egg whites ice etc.

My morning shake also has a tsp of unsweetened cocoa glutamine and a couple of whole eggs. Its about 750 cals. Mine is for breakfast. You can omit some things and reduce the quantity of others for a pre workout shake.
