Hi

I workout twice a week with weight training (all i can for my workout otherwise i'll overtrain), and do cardio in the form of cycling once a week, but i'm getting a bit of a belly.
Before i started training, i was really skinny, but since then (about 9 months ago), i've put on muscle and not really any fat. My belly when it's resting however, is getting bigger, although when i tense it, it comes in and i can see my 6 pack. It's really confusing me and i'm going on holiday in 2 months so i need it sorted. I don't drink or anything but i have been drinking a lot of water lately because i'm on a creatine cycle, could that have anything to do with it?

Any feedback will be much appreciated
Thanks in advance
Peter

I had the same problem. My guess would be one of two things, it's either your diet or your ab workout. I have found that adding more weight and really pushing hard on my ab workout has helped me to get the coveted 6-pack.

The best exercise I have found is adding weight to a roman-chair type situp using a decline bench. I hold a 45 pound dumbbell on my chest as close to my neck as possible while doind 4 sets of 15-20. I do leg raises for lower abs. Adding weight to your ab workout is very important.

I've also cut back on total calories. I'm not competing I just want to feel and look good. So if it slows my progress a bit it really doesn't bother me.

Hope this helps.

First explain to me how you would be overtraining by workout with weights more than twice a week? and one day of cardio? I think you need more weight trainign and more cardio besides what is your diet like?

Thanks for your replies.
Firstly, i'd be overtraining because from my leg day, my legs ache for about 4 days, about 5 max, and my pecs always ache about 4 days after my upper workout as well. I would like to do cardio more than once a week, but i do it when my legs aren't aching, which is 2 days before my leg day, and 1 day after my upper workout. There's not really a day when a part of my body isn't aching, so if i work it when i'm aching, i'll overtrain.
I eat quite a lot (i think), but i haven't really put fat on, if much and i need to in order to gain muscle because i find it quite hard to gain size. I don't really eat any fatty foods, but i do have my chicken fried when i have it and drink at least 3 pints of milk a day.
I started added ab training to my workouts a couple of weeks ago, but as i said, i can see my abs quite easily so i don't think it's a fat problem, but i want to make them better.

Also, i think my rib cage or chest may be expanding, because when i stretch my chest sometimes, it clicks, and when i suck my stomach in, my rib cage looks quite big.

Ok just becasue you are aching does not mean you are going to over train. Overtraining occurs when you work a muscle group 2 or more times a week really intense and do this for a long period of time. What is you workout split like. This is mine:
Mon Chest/biceps
wed back, tri
fri shoulders
sunday legs
I can assure you that I am not even close to overtraing. Am I sore during these workouts hell yeah but I still lift regardless, just makre sure tht you are not working those same muscle groups multiple times a week and you will be ok.

If your aching for 4 days after your workout, try drinking WAY more water, and I believe there is a supplement you can take to speed the muscle rebuilding process, I just can't remember the name of it.

Talk to a PT for working with your core. I found that my tummy was expanding until I learned proper form holding that navel to the spine during exercises and breathing. Also I do a lot of my work balancing on that Swiss ball which is good for the core. Now I have added Pilates to the mix and if you think it looks easy or wussy I challenge you to try it because you feel it the next day and I am getting results. NOw understand I am 49 and had 3 children and genetically had a thick middle so I do not expect miracles but I see improvement in my tummy and midsection from the above. Diet is very important too. Too many carbs will settle into the problem areas wherever genetically that may be on you.
