Show of weakness?
Most likely it is popping when the joint opens up and the pressue changes in it - like when you crack your knuckles.
Does it feel grind or crunchy? in that case it could be that your legs are a little off track and not sitting or gliding correctly on the knee joint. You may need to do some corrective exercises to balance your qauds and hamstrings.
If you are worried, or if there is pain associated with it, see your doctor.
I used to sound like rice crispies when I went up and down the stairs, squatted, etc. i don't know when it quit, but it did..odd.

I'm going to have you do a test, and I need you to tell me what the results are. Find your 6rm in the leg extension, and your 6rm in the leg curl (standing or lying), and tell me what those numbers are.
