Well, I have quit smoking. I am into day 9 and have had some deep urges. I have resisited.
I am posting this because it feels as though I am giving greater commitment to my own cause by collaborating with the FT community at large!

Keep up the good work nerraw. It really does get easier as time goes on. If you slip up, get back on track as soon as you can - we only really quit smoking once :)

Way to go nerraw. 9 days is HUGE!!! I remember when I quit I would count the days and the urges until one day it occurred to me that I hadn't had an urge or even thought about it for awhile. I knew then that I had kicked a habit I had lived with for many years. You will have that experience, too. Congratulations.

nerraw - I am a few days behind you but I'm right with you mentaly. I start on Zyban tomorrow and will be starting the patch Dec. 2nd HANG IN THERE for a couple more days and we can start supporting each other here. Do you do any cardio and if so, have you noticed if you can breath better and has your stamina increased? Just wondering because that's the only reason I am quitting and if it won't produce those results I might have a harder time convincing myself why I should not start smoking again.

Tough it out one minute at a time, one day at a time. You can do it!

Hi Pauline,
Great to know you are on the same trip as me, dare i say don't let me down?
Yes I do cardio, however haven't noticed the difference just yet although I can feel it. Right now when I get up to a full gallop my lungs want to burst and I spend a huge amount of time coughing..., well I won't describe it here!
I managed to get through 5 miles in 45 minutes before quitting, recently knocked that back to 40 so I am looking forward to nailing 30 minutes with my new set of air filters.
What is tangible now is: Smell, I don't reek of stale tobacco, which I'm noticing on others. And yesterday I noticed the rich aroma of chocolate, found my wifes stash as a result. Taste, I'm starting to pick up new flavours in food and more importantly wine. There must be plenty more, so don't cave in keep at it, shout if you need support.

Warren.

You have my encouragement! Way to go! I know how difficult it is. I smoked for 20 yrs., and have quit for 18 now. I know the difficulties. You are strong, and have all the encouragement I can give you! Keep it up. You will succeed.

Dare I say I won't let you down? :-) Statistics say it takes 5 to 7 tries before smokers quite for good. Statistics also say that 1 in 90 alcoholics/addicts get sober and stay sober. I was the 1 in 90 who made it so I'm hopeful that I can break my cigarette habit as well.

5 miles??!!! WOW!!!! I can't run two miles without having to walk a little, but I couldn't walk around the block when I started last month.

I am off to my quit smoking class. Can we continue this in personal email so we don't clutter the fitness board with smoking issues? Thanks for all your support Warren.

There may be a few others on the board struggling with smoking. My date is January 3 for quitting. Why don't you guys keep it on the board. I'll need all the help I can get. Even from you Pauline. BTW, I'm a friend of Bill's too.

I had smoked for about 17 years before I quit. nerraw talked about the way your sense of smell changes. I can relate. I remember the spring after I quit. I could smell the Honeysuckles in the air. That was a smell I hadn't had the pleasure of all the years I smoked. I look forward to the spring every year just for that scent. Your sense taste will change too. That may or may not be good, if you know what I mean. Hang in there and Good Luck folks.

nerraw, we can keep it here. No shame in my game, I just didn't want to offend anyone.

Charlie - I knew it, I knew it!! *hugs* I got it when you told me my signature had special meaning to you, although I don't remember picking that up from Bill. Hmmm. Friends of Bill know other friends of Bill without saying it. How long have you known him? I've known him for 7 years.

fryer91 - no comment, I seemed to have lost my sense of humor the last week and can't come back with any funny responses so I'll just sit back for awhile.

I am sorry Pauline...Sometimes I go a little crazy trying to get a laugh out of someone...Can't help myself!...Life can be sooo damn tough at times, and can eat away at one physically and emotionally...I do everything I can to have a good attitude about things, and reach out to people that can help me through some crap...Just ask Mutt....

Anyway, I am sorry if I had offended you in any way.

Sincerely,

Mike

P.S.- I do smoke after sex; Doral Light 100's-have been smokin for years...God-cardio is a real thrill...I have cut back, not mentally ready to give them up yet, but I know I have to.....I am weak!

Keep pushin On

Paulinelagasey, this post is for you.
I spent some time running this weekend, after spending the better part of the past two weeks coughing up both my lungs...!
Finally I can report that my workouts are great and I am able to notice my better breathing, strength and stamina. I put it down to the smokes. I was able to get through my five miles in 36 minutes. YES PLEASE, those cancer sticks were seriously holding me back. Hope you have the courage to kick butt this week.
I'm travelling, but will check in to see if you have made progress.
Cheers,
Warren.

::clap::

Oh my, I just noticed your nick is your name spelled backwards. DUH ME!! Only took me 2 weeks to figure it out!!! Yikes, I sure hope one of the benefits of not smoking is a sharper mind, cause I really scare myself sometimes. So ..... its 8:17 a.m. here in Missouri, haven't had a cigarette yet. I threw all my ashtrays and lighters out this morning. One hour at a time .....

Thank you charlie826. That's more support then my husband has given me. I don't understand. He has said 3 really nice things about my weight in the last week, yet when I just called to let him know I havn't had the nicotine patch on for over 24 hours now, he says "oh". That's it!? Geeez, he smokes and he also knows Bill, so you'd THINK he would be a little more happy for me, KNOWING that quitting smoking is TONS harder then eating good and going to the gym. I think he doesn't think I am going to make it, yet he knows I can only do it one day at a time, I can't say I will never ever smoke again, but I can NOT smoke today, isn't that how we get our years Charlie? So .. I really needed to hear some rah-rah. *hugs*

oh neerrrraw, wheerre aaarre uuuu???? I wanted to let you know that I haven't had a cigarette for 7 days, count them, seven beautiful 24 hours in a row!!!! WOOOHOOO!!!
And here's the really good news. Last week I couldn't run a 12 minute mile without walking a little. Today I ran 2 miles in 23 min. and I didn't walk at all AND I wasn't gasping for breathe AND I think I had more in me but when I hit 2 miles I couldn't believe what I had done (my mind couldn't wrap itself around the numbers LOL) so I stopped. LOL :-( Seeeee, I KNEEEEWW my body wanted to run, I KNEW IT!! My lungs are thanking me big time!!

How you doin' Warren?

So, Charlie sends me an email saying ... "Hey cutie pie. long time no hear from. You know it's habit with us to check up on each other. Are you out there chain smokin??"

Here's my response ...Funny you should ask .... I am chain smoking like a mad women in my head. hahaha Oh my gosh I want a smoke soooo bad right now. I have a little bit of anger going on, nothing like some pent up emotion to make you wanna smoke. Go to the gym you say?? Well geee, what a good idea. Problem is it snowed last night and hubby doesn't want me to drive in it. O.K., so that's nice of him to care about me, he just loves me and doesn't want me to wreck the car, right? EXCEPT that I KNEW this would be a problem LAST month!! He won't get me a membership to the gym because I can drive 30 minutes to the base and use the free gym. UNLESS it's snowing!!! Hello?? Is it not winter??? I told him last month I was not going to NOT go to the gym just because it's snowing. I can't slack all winter.

UUUUGGHHH!!!!!!!!!! Sheeesh, does any of this really matter? Must be the withdrawel huh? Has anyone else gotten like this when they stopped? I feel like a crazy women. It seems like every little thing is HUGE!! Is it just me?

**** 8 days and counting .... *****

Well hi there Butt Kickers....
Pauline I'm damned impressed with your achievement, you go girl!

As for the mind sharpening up, well I don't know about that, I tried keeping up with "who wants to be a millionaire" and have to say that I am still as stupid as I was when I smoked! At least I am a healthier kind of dumb.
Great to see you are getting the mileage up, I am blasting through my routine and feeling really on top of things.

I had a challenging time the past two weeks as I was travelling on business to Vegas and then Hawaii, yeah I know.... anyhow the crowd I was working with hit the smokes hard and I really didn't even crave a drag. I think I might be heading toward the home straight although I am petrified to say I am cured as I really do feel as though I am one drag away from starting again.

Keep at it.
Cheers.

Wow, How did I ever miss this thread in the past! You guys rock. Congrats to you for kicking the habit.
It only gets better! I guess you know where this post is going!
When I first started training in Sept 201, I was an experienced 32 yr smoker. I used to do about 5 minutes of cardio (walking at 3mph on the treadmill) yes that was cardio, take a break, go outside the gym for a smoke! Come back do my weights, and have a protein shake with a smoke!
Just wanted to paint the lovely lifestyle picture!
Anyway it is 2 yrs and 2 mnths, smoke free. You guys can do it too.
When we have to think of how long we haven't smoked, then we beat it.
You guys are there! Go and run!

Spend time daily, hourly, 15 minutely navigating my way around the urge to fire up a smoke.
I got my gallop in today, whipped 6 miles into shape in 45 minutes.
So into day 32....who's counting anyway!

Hey Charlie 826
I wondered when you were going to board the train, hopefully that hypnosis gig doesn't wear off to soon?

Oh and by the way you'll know it's worn off when you start hurling plates around the kitchen, swearing at your spouse, and cursing the driver in front of you, get angry because the phone rang etc.

Shout when the going gets tough ..... I still get twitchy fingers and hanker for a drag, but am hanging in there 52 DAYS>>>!
2004/01/07, 11:25 AM
Well , here's the deal. We did go to the hypnotist. Victoria, I guess it is a form of hypnotherapy except we didn't go into my childhood . As Warren said, one of the problems with smoking cessation is the propensity to want to murder violently, cry profusely and inflict mayhem on everybody and his dog. Elaine and I wanted to avoid that.

Having quit before we both remembered the first three days were the most unstable. We are both in the 2nd day and the worst has yet to happen. Last night after our workouts and dinner we sat in the living room looking at tv, our books and each other. Instead of sharpening our weapons arsenal and preparing for battle, we alternated falling asleep through the 3 hours of prime time that the National Broadcasting Company had arranged for us personally. Then we both got up and went to sleep in the bed like sane adults.

I guess that the sudden absense of nicotine caused the narcolepsy. The hypnotist did use touchy feely words like "well being" in her post hypnotic suggestions which always creeps me out but overall, the session seems to have worked. We have had no cravings, fights, blood, broken bones, flying telephones, wailing or gnashing of teeth.

I was somewhat skeptical about hypnosis and I had the therapist help me cook up a scheme for a little side test. A few months ago I added chinups into my workout routine. Me and my lil brother fryer and paulenelagassey were lamenting that we couldn't do them. Well I have worked hard for 10 weeks to become chinworthy. I've added 1 chin every other week and I now do 4 sets of 5 unassisted chins in my workout.

For sheets and geegles I had her give me a post hypnotic suggestion that I be able to do 10 chins. She told me some mumbo jumbo about believing for 17 seconds that I could do it then I would. Well, I must have only believed for 16 seconds 'cause I only made 9 chins. Our little experiment wasn't a total success but I did jump from a 5 rep max to 9 reps in 1 sitting. Pretty cool huh?

Wow, that's great! I've always wondered if those sessions were worth looking into. I have a terrible habit of chewing my lip and the inside of my cheeks. It drives my family crazy. Of course it is worse when I am stressed. (When my son was in Kuwait, right before they moved into Iraq in March, my brother called me from IN and asked if I had chewed a hole all the way through yet.)

Whatever you do don't chew on it for to long as it must be really gnawful allowing stress to eat away at you like that.

Glad to see their are a few people here in the same boat. I quit in November after smoking for 16 and at least a pack a day habit. I have been trying to increase my cardio bit by bit but still feel like I can't get enough air into my lungs. I know this will get better over time but I was wondering what people have been doing to get stronger on the treadmill.

Cheers,
