It seems like weight training has really changed from 12 years ago. I usually workout at home, but try to get to the local Golds Gym once a week. Last night I was at Gold's, and was asked to spot a guy going for a new max on bench. No problem, but his mind seemed pre-occupied by a girl doing stiff-legged deadlifts. It was so apparent, and really embarrassing to me to the point to where I got mad. The girl was getting a little pissed off too. I asked him if he was going to attempt a lift, or ask her on a date. Well, he didn't take it to well..I told him that if he concentrated as much on his lift as he did on the girls butt, he would probably lift 10 pounds more then he ever had before. He more or less told me to go to hell...Well, now I was pissed, he was pissed, and she was already pissed. When she walked to the water fountain, I followed...She asked if I worked out with that asshole very often...Of course I thought, oh an opportunity...I shared the conversation I had with the asshole, and we devised a scheme to have her spot him, and given the opportunity to say what she felt....She did! Sweet justice!
Guess what?
He lifted 15 pounds more then he ever had. She got to say what was on her mind. Boy, is he ever mad at me; oh well...
Are we here to help each other out, and lift to our hearts content, or is the gym now a pick up joint?

Hee hee! You get better results from lifting it yourself than watching other people lift it, eh? What a concept.
Unfortunatley, the gym (except for the YMCA) is a meat market in most places. But look at some of the ad campaigns, women in skin tight leather hotpants working out like strippers with whips..
At least there are some guys like you who stil have manners and a sense of humor.
Gosh, I always firgured they were staring in horror because they had never seen a female deadlift that much weight....

OhMyGod!! Bev Francis is one of my favorite female weightlifter/bodybuilders ever! What a cool story. She is/was a record breaker! Maybe she was in your neck of the woods for some competition, she was a powerlifter, bodybuilder, gym owner, so many things... COOL!

Well, she was awesome in every sense of the word. She was quite the teacher with the short amount of time I had spent learning from her. She was kind of hard to understand; kinda an Australian accent/slur, yo no whut I meens Mate?!Maybe not that bad, but I could definately tell she was from some other place.
asimmer: By the way, my shoulders and elbows are feeling better; thanks for advice. Slowly getting to the heavier weights; someday I will be there again...
