Hello all new to board and weight training. I just joined a gym and have access to both free weights and universal machines. My goal is to lose weight and tone up. Any ideas on where to start? I am thinking the machines as i have no spotter for now. can you get a good chest workout using seated bench press. I figure for biceps i can use free weights but not sure what to do. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks

u can get a great beginning program here at FT. they even have diagrams and photos. if you have any specific questions on that program or anything else, we'll try to help.
to start with machines is fine until u get use to the motions, then u can start incorporating free weights.
glad u made the decision to start lifting. best of luck to you..........michael

Yes first of all welcome here plbab. As Michael says, it's a good idea to start with the machines since it's a guided movement (and less risk of hurting yourself). Don't worry you can get a fine beginner work out only using the machines.
Later of course you'll need to work with free weights as well.

We are here to help you, but don't you have a instructor in the gym who can show you how to do excactly the exercises?

Very small gym you are for the most part on your own. I may track down another member that has been there for awhile.

Asking other members would be a good alternative. Just remember that bodybuilding is consistency and good form is everything. Start with light-weights and always pyramid up. Machines are OK but they don't hit the stabilizer muscles like free weights. Free weights is the basics to Bodybuilding and machines are used more for isolation movements. I would try to using combination of both. As the other members already said "FT is a great place to get your beginners program".

Well simple exercise like deadlifts, bench press, and squats should work fine. these three exercise, especially squats, will help you gain muscle fast and lose weight. also add in some cardio of course.
