hey people. Just thought i might update my progress...im male and 5 7. Before starting this program i was 195 lbs. Now i am 175 in two months. According to my BMI i need to get down to 150-160. i started eating only healthy foods (salmon, tuna, whole wheat bread, breakfast lol, salad, etc) and stopped the soda/hamburgers/pizza totally. I am on the freetrainers weightloss and abs (or lack thereof)progs and going to gym five days a week (plus running 5 those five days also) At first it was hard. But this site has really gotten me excited and powered up. Thx to everyone. Now for my question....i know this is true but why: to lose weight u need to run AND weight train. Why weight train? doesnt that make u gain weight? juss a question . Thx again all.

Congratulations on your achievements....after all that is what this website is all about, truly wonderful! As for your question building muscle will burn more calories at rest. I believe that a pound of muscle will burn an excess of fifty calories give or take just by being muscle....put it to work and your calorie burning goes through the roof. Plus, most people want to look like people in magazines, those people have extremely low fat %, and they lift weights. A person doesn't actually have to run to lose weight, running just heightens the calorie burn for quicker fat loss results.

Congratulations on your acheivements! Great that we can be a part of it.

In answer to your question, richardjst did a good job. Nothing burns fat more than muscle mass. Muscle burns fat even at rest. So, weight train. And cardio is/should be thought of as an extension of your diet. With cutting calories, adding cardio adds even a more significant calorie deficit. It is tough to cut enough calories with diet alone after a time, you cannot cut your calories to the bone, nor should you want to,and cardio can supply that extra calorie cut.
