I wasn't sure where to go with this question. It's sort of diet based but doesn't talk specifics so I didn't think it belonged in the diet boards.
Anyway, a question for you. My work out buddie is very trim, and he's been working out 5 days a week for the better part of 20 years or so. I've been tagging along with him trying to learn from him.
He believes I'm not eating enough, and I tell him don't tell a fat man he's not eating enough! :) He's eating about 3000 calories a day in the attempt to gain more muscle. I probably take in about 1300-1500 per day.
My question is... if I'm eating less than my bodys burning shouldn't I be loosing fat? My goal is too gain muscle and loose fat around my waist and face. Am I on the right track or should I be eating more as well as training?

You are not eating enough.
Fill out your profile - we don't know enough about you to give you any help.
Your friend is fit and you are fat - who do you think knows more about how much to eat?
-------------- "To be able to go to the gym and train hard is a joy and a privelege, even though the hard work necessitates driving yourself through considerable discomfort. Savor this privelege and blessing, and revel in it."

Eating more is the 'new' science of eating less. This site tells a lot of truth. Gains muscle sheds pounds if you read it all and take in the best bits...
protein must be high to cover muscle building... Carbs must be complex and cut out all the simple sugars/carbs you can.
Eat the same food you do now, but eat it in more portions over the day... 6 times a day.. keep your metabolism supported this way... make a realistic goal of 2 pounds loss a week and eat enough i.e. I have to eat 1978 calories with 182 grams of protein to maintain my muscle... To reduce fat, I am happy to lose it at 1/2 a pound a fortnight by trimming this figure by only 200 calories most days

If you reduce your caloric intake too low, your metabolism will slow in response, thyroid output will become compromized, and you will not lose weight. Correct dieting is really an art, many have the mistaken notion that cutting calories to the bone will result in weight loss, when in fact it will have the opposite effect in the long run due to the reasons I stated. Your only loss will be from lean tissue, so your fat to muscle ratio will become even worse. Your lean tissue(muscle) burns more calories even at rest.
