Hi all, I'm looking for tips for a thin girl to increase upper body strength. So far I've gone from 2 sets of 10 girl pushups to 2 sets of 40 (80 total!) real military pushups. Have also gone from 105lbs to about 115-120lbs with my weight training.

I would prefer not to use machine equipment, can anyone recommend specific exercises for the upper body using dumbells and the barbell? I have those at home.

My upper body program so far:

Standing Dumbell Curl (2 sets, 8 reps, 15lbs)
Standing Dumbell Lateral Raise (2 sets, 8 reps, 8lbs)
Dumbell Row (2 sets, 12 reps, 15lbs)
Standing Overhead Dumbell Triceps Extension (2 sets, 8 reps, 15lbs)
Dumbell Incline Press (2 sets, 12 reps, 10lbs)
Push Ups (2 sets, 1 minute each, up to 40 per set)

sign up for an at-home progarm here - it will ask you what equipment you have. there is also an exercise encyclopedia under the fitness resources tab, i think...

Nice work. 2 sets of 40 military push ups is quite the accomplishment.

There are a lot of the same posts asking close to the same thing. You can take the same advice, as it all applies to both males and females. You'll notice we tend to give out the same advice a lot (compound movements first and most, etc) as this is the stuff that works.
