Can someone give me a brief explanation and run down of what exacly hyperextensions do? What areas the exercise targets? What the benefits of it are? Thanks!

Hyper extension is the opposite of hyper flexion. It's not an exercise but a "form" or way of holding -for example your leg or arm;
Completely straight or entirely bent (things that you should avoid if you got any problems with your joints!!).

When I warm up I do hyper extensions (with my arms) when I do lat pull downs (but I would never do it when I start lifting heavy). Okey? (o;

Lots of people also refer to hyperextensions as the low back exersize machines the ones that you arch your back and push back on a pad or something.

Hyperextension target the erector spinae muscles, this is felt mostly in the lower back. The main thing to remember is that this should be a slow, controlled movement, because the movement can put the vertebrae and disks at extreme risk if it is done improperly. The back should not be arched at the extension point, only pulled slightly past neutral. Hope this helps.
