What are you looking for? A power rack with 300lbs of free weights and a bench can be purchased for pretty cheap. The machines are usually more expensive, but can be safer.

You can do plenty with just a bench and a few dumbbells.

you can do your entire body with dumbells. you can do one legged squats while holding the dumbells, you can do lateral raise, front raise, bent over row, lunges, tons of stuff the sky is the limit

If you are really looking for a good machine , check out the ''BODY SOLID'' line they got some good stuff , i had one of their machines before i started going to the gym and i loved it .Sometimes you can find one for sale by someone for cheaper than retail, since they start at around 1000 $

Memberships may be cheaper - but for some getting to the gym is next to impossible...so having a way to lift at home means they will "get it done".
(in my family we are both self-employed and have crazy hours and 3 kids - so unless I take time off from building my business or spend less time with the kids - my workouts have to be at home or wait a few more years until the kids aren't quite so time demanding)
