Interesting question. However, the definition you seek is someone who "builds or sculpts" their body through weight training and any other means in order to achieve their goals.

Now, there are different classes of bodybuilders (i.e. amateur, professional/competitive, recreational, powerlifters, etc.)...I guess this is a matter of perspective.

Let's see how others define this as I am curious to find out their definitions.

bodybuilding to me is anyone who "consistently weight trains" to enhance/or change their physique.

Yeah.. this question is pretty open to many interpretations.

In my opinion.. bodybuidling is 'sculpting' the body into a vision which you have set to achieve.. The term 'bodybuilder' scares many people because they automatically assume 'huge-muscle-bound-freaks'.

Let's see what others have to say as well..

I think of someone as a bodybuilder if they weight train with the intention of changing their body, but people that do it to be in better shape for a sport, like football or basketball, I don't think of as bodybuilders even though they are building their body for competition. But, I also beleive if someone considers themself a bodybuilder, they are a bodybuilder even if they may not look the part.

bodybuilding would be defined as being a sport in which the athlete combines all physical fitness components into his training to improve the way his psyique looks.

Wow a question which there can be no wrong answer. I tend to think of a bodybuilder as someone that enhances their physique with changing their lifestyle. Weight lifting, eating right, cardio. The way I look at it were all bodybuilders here some more advanced than others. Now when I was in school if you asked me to define bodybuilding my first responce would be roid monsters. But since starting this I look at it in a different way. For me it's now just my lifestyle.

I tend to agree with you, Sanddevil...there is no wrong answer. As I've said before, it's all a matter of perspective. We're all in it for our own personal fitness goals and so, we're all bodybuilders!

If I say the word Body Building in France, people don't like it and often get scared...... SO in my gym we are talking about TONING!!!! lol, yes I know it's the same thing, working on your body building muscles......

I'm proud of being a Body Builder. I don't see BB's as big monsters, but just people caring more about their bodies, working with their muscles, following a diet to be able to shape -what they think is the perfect body.... (now you got diff opinions about that)

Interesting points you are all making. Sometimes when people ask me what I do to "look the way I do" I sometimes say I am into "bodybuilding". I usually get a look from them and they make some comment indicating that I sure don't look like a "bodybuilder". Now if I say I "weight train and watch my diet" I get a positive comment like "Wow I should do that too" or "keep it up, you look great" . SO my point is obviously most people look at bodybuilders as
"individuals who build their bodies to the extreme in order to compete"

Bodybuilding to me is what I'm doing currently in my life: trying to recondition and restore the body and engine of my '69 Bronco so I can enter it into a classic car show.

Sorry, everyone.............I had to be a lil' different!
