Is it ok to do front shoulder raises with the thumbs up, like a dumbell hammer curl, or is this putting the shoulder in a bad position?

I'm not an expert but I would think that if you don't go above parallel to the floor then it wouldn't put anything in a bad position. I would think that going above parallel would put a lot of strain on the joint and could lead to injury.

Again not an expert, but just looking at it logically.

better question is why do front raises to begin with(you train front deltoids in just about every pressing movement)...focus on more compound movements(jerks, push presses, military presses, etc) and if you choose to do smaller exercises for the shoulders choose exercises for the rear deltoids which are often neglected in shoulder programs.

i usually use front and side raises 2 x 10 each for a shoulder warmup before bench.

Why not warm up with push ups and light benching ? That way you will be warming up all the muscles you will be using while benching.
