Yesterday was my first day ever at the gym. I am trying to go 6 days a week. I go at lunch for 20 min or cardio and 25 min. of weight training. Then I go back after work for 40 min of cardio. I am so excited about this. Any advice is appreciated.

The best advice I can give .. For me its better if I dont skip a day at all of going to the gym -- Even if a couple of days I only go for 15 minutes to jog. Otherwise I get slack and end up missing a couple of days instead of just one. It can be hard to stay comitted to going on a regular basis -- once I did that I feel great now that I am working out daily!:) Dawn

That is awesome! I live in a very small town and the gym is tiny and only open 6 days a week. So I am committing to 6 days. I will try to take a walk on Sundays if possible (its cold here now and I dont work well in the cold) :)

6 days is a lot to maintain for extended periods of time, be aware of burning out. Why don't you aim for 4-5 days and if you make it 6 then good for you.

Your body needs rest as well.

I used to walk 6-7 miles a day before it got cold. So I spent more time walking then I do at the gym. But, if I feel its too much you are right I will drop down to 4 or 5 days a week... I really want to keep it up and not burn out.

Hi Chelle,
ecle5c is right, I went to the gym 6 days a week when I started (there's nothing as bad as the newly converted!). For about three months it was all good. Then for no reason I could put my finger on the weight loss stopped and I had absolutely no energy at all. None.
I decided to take a week off the gym (to be honest I couldn't be bothered) and ate pizza and iced cream for a week. You know what? The weight started coming off again!

You'll see lots of advice saying eat plenty of the right stuff and don't over do it. It's absolutely true if you want to be in this for the long haul.

Thank you Jon. I am in for the long haul. I find that going to the gym helps in other ways too... relieve stress!!

Thanks for all all your advice.

The gym is a wonderful place to relieve stress! And just to let you know, the more lean muscle mass you put on through strength training, the more calories a day you will burn through. Congratulations for committing to fitness!

I agree...no better place to relieve stress than the gym. I just got back from christmas shopping, so I need about 80 straight hours in the gym.

Nice to see the enthusiasim here. Your body only can take so much, ecle5c hit the nail on the head. Don't take it the wrong way, but we do need rest days. Good luck and keep up the hard work.
