I keep a journal of all my workouts and I try to record everything I eat. Today I had to refer back to it and I am glad that I had it. Also helps me in the gym to keep track of what I am lifting. What a great tool to have along with your weights and Tuna. So how many of you have one and what do you use it for?

Great idea for a thread Sandysford.
I always have kept a record my training and cardio since day 1. I had to refer back to a couple of weeks ago because I had injured a flexor in my left arm (not serious) and wanted to show my trainer exactly when it happened. I also keep a daily record of what I eat on fitday.
Mrs carivan thinks I'm a little too deep! But hey...
it gives me joy!

Yes I do, and I use it religiously. I belive that it is one of the most important tools (and also the CHEAPEST!) that anyone can have if they're serious about attaining their own particular goals.

I have a paper one that I take to the gym with me that is based on an Excel program that I created; plus, I keep one online for others to see my progress (thanks, Nina!), albeit not as strict as my paper-bound journal.

I keep one for my workouts and one for my diet. I started the workout one in the beginning because if I didn't write everything down (usually with a description) ahead of time I was at the gym way too long trying to figure it out. It took me a while to remember what things were called and how they were done. It became a habit and I would be lost without it. Almost everyday I refer back to see what I did the last time. My food journal I made from a computer program and it really comes in handy as far as only having to look up the nutrition values once, then I just have to refer back to that day. (Of course the first couple weeks I was weighing and looking up everything.) Like you, carivan, my spouse thinks I'm a little obsessed, but hey it works for me!

It is an invaluable tool. It doesn't matter how smart you are, next week you will forget "something" you did the last week, it is a busy world for all of us, and if not how many reps then weight or something. It keeps me progressing. I look at what I did the last time, and try to match or beat it if but by 2 1/2 lbs. or one rep. This way I am always moving ahead. I buy a $1.19 notebook at Wal Mart, 5 subject, the last 2 supject sections I use for workouts and cardio, and the first 3 I use for diet. I used to laugh at people who did this when I was younger and dumber! If you are serious, it is the way to go. Guesswork whether on your diet or trainng will usually not get you too far.

As far as genetics go, the skies the limit. You are limited only by your mental perception of it.

I did. Then I didn't. Then I did. Then I didn't again. Now I do again. I find that I do a LOT better at sticking with my exercise and nutrition plan if I keep a journal.

I kept a gym-issued weightlifting chart for my first 10 months. Now I just come home and write "gym" on my wall calendar if I go :D I do track calories daily with my watch though :D
