I was curious, when working out and you feel pain in your joints (especially shoulders and knees) assuming you stop your workout and don't make it any worse, do the joints get damaged (and scar tissue)or do they heal? My brother has 6 shoulder surgeries which stemmed from working out.

Because of this, i am extremely paranoid. Whenever i do chest or shoulders, if i feel pain in the joints i stop. Last week while doing flies, my left shoulder joint really hurt. I immediately stopped and havent worked out since.

So my question is, am i damaging my joints everytime i workout? If I stop immediately when I feel pain will I be ok? I know form has a lot to do with this so I try to make sure my form is perfect and go slow with the weights and not to jerk anything. Anyone else have this problem?

This is the exact reason I preach the protocol of taking a week off if you lift heavy all the time every 8-10 weeks. Muscles can normally always keep up, they are not the problem as much as ligaments, joints, tendons, nerve endings. With heavy hard work all the time and no recovery time, they can become damaged over time. The stress from heavy lifting is tough on these, and a major reason you hear of so many injuries....torn tendon, torn ligament, bursitis in the shoulders, etc. It is crucial to rest them. This is a time your muscles will grow too with proper diet, so it is a win/win situation. Some of us are guilty of not doing this (the rest period)and get away with it, myself included, but it is not in practice a good thing. At the very least, have heavy/light days.

Yes, this is very good, and add in EFA's.

ssminnow - make sure you are not incraesing your weights too rapidly. When you have a new routine with a rep range, say 8-12, it means start with a weight you can lift 8 times, for 3 sets. When 8 is easy, go to 10 reps, 3 sets if you can get 'em. then up to 12 reps, 3 sets. Then when 12 reps for 3 sets is easy, you can go up to the next wiehgt. This progression may not make you ego as happy as going up in weight every workout, but it will save wear and tear on your joints and ligaments.
Also- have someone knowledgable check your form, your knees and shoulders shouldn't hurt if you are in good form with the right weight. Flyes are not a movement you really want to go heavy on, anyhow. Try doing presses and twisting into a flye position at the top - much easier in your shoulder joints and you still get that good squeez at the top.

Some people have slight biomechanical variations, meaning you have to slightly change the angle you do certain exercises at. try doing your flyes or presses with your elbows a little below shoulder level instead of straight out (not below towards the floor, but I mean closer to your body by a few degress so your waist to armpit makes a v instead of a square, does that make sense?)

i have recurring shoulder pain (from a past rotator cuff problem about 2 years back). should i look into Glucosamine Chondroitin to help me with the pain and over all health of my joints? or would it be pointless for me?

There is a lot of research showing glucosamine/chondriotin to be effective in joint protection, and now in pain control when coupled with ibuprofen.
My cleint with arthritis said her doctor recommends it for everyone, so it must be viewed as aiding in repair/maintainanace as well as prevention for worn joints. Try it and see if it seems to make a difference after a few weeks.
Continueing with the rotator cuff rehab exercises they gave you after surgery will help, also.(if you had surgery or rehab)

Jsom, it really does work, but sometimes you have to stick with it 4-6 weeks before noticing a difference, I don't know why this is.
