Ok, my life has presented such a time crunch that I have resorted to doing "maintenance" exercises at this little all women's gym close to the business until I can find the time to go back to our regular gym.

LADY 1---Oh my God, I've done so good today, all I have had is my slim-fast and I had a few cookies, but they were fat free.

Lady 2---Good for you!! You know, you should try sucking on some candy if you have a sweet tooth, they don't have any fat either...and they really do make you feel full!!

Lady 1---I know, but it all comes down to will power, you know what I mean?...Plan and simple, just don't eat unless you are really, really hungry.

Lady 2---I know, I've gotten to where I only eat breakfast and tiny portions at supper and it doesn't even bother me at all!!

Lady 1---Really?!? Wow, how much have you lost?

Lady 2---5 pounds!!

Lady 1---Uggh, I'm so jealous!

At this point I could control myself no longer and proceeded to give the speech encompassing all that I have known and learned on this sight about diet, health and exercise. I said some things gracefull and I said some things very coursely. Now I'm sitting here thinking that I probably came off as a know-it-all.

Maybe I should have just kept my mouth shut and tended to myself. I mean, I am no expert, but I wanted to set them on the right path. Was I wrong?

No, I don't think you were wrong... probably (pardon the pun) gave them some food for thought... people have to realize starving yourself is bad... who in the hell told them sucking on a candy would make you feel full? It'll just make you hungrier!

We should all have little Free Trainers business cards to hand out to these people... man... maybe not too bad of an idea.... hhmmm..... leave 'em at gyms around the world... ...

Good for you dfly411, seriously, you just got an earful of what so many people have been taught. When I worked at a women's gym, that was the way conversation went throughout the day with many members, unfortunately, even when I corrected and showed technique, etc., they just kept doing what they were doing and would get FURIOUS at us when they wouldn't see results!

The candy thing has been around a long, long time - if in need of a treat, eat something sweet, like hard candy, as it will last and last, putting a stop to your cravings - yeah, right, like you said Tim, just makes you hungrier!

I have been guilty of the same thing from time to time in the past and have had to remind myself that good food is good energy, good food is good energy. I wish we had a merit badge we could give you, you did your good deed for the day, let's just hope someone listened!!

I think you should have let Hec explain it. He is the most shining example of sensitivity and diplomacy I know. You live with the master. Let him handle it.

I would say a daisy. Cuz you know how they start out as those things with the fuzz, and then they turn out to be such beautiful things if you just let them...

Hec is definitely a prickly pear blossom.

Dfly - you did the right thing, unfortunately they wil all probably go on sucking hard candy and not getting results. But you tried, and that is what is important. Now amaze them by getting results while they spin their wheels!

I was privy to something rather disturbing today, as well, though I didn't do as well as dfly.

The temp working for us is on the "Cabbage Soup Diet". Last time she tried it, she lost 18 pounds! (Obviously, it wasn't fat loss.) Apparently, she eats this soup everyday along with "prescribed" foods. Like one day, she can eat all the bananas she wants. Another day, all the skim milk. And she was so excited that one day, she even gets to have a baked potato with butter.

She was on a high protein diet the last two weeks. Guess that didn't work as well as the last time she tried it when she lost a whopping 50 pounds!:laugh:

Actually, asimmer, now that you mention it, she carries a large bottle of perfume in her purse. That would be a good reason why. You can smell her within 20 feet!

In a similar vain I was corrected by someone in the gym the other day. I suppose in a way I was offended, but on the other hand..and as I expressed to him was grateful that he'd taken the time to point out my error, I did however ask for a demonstration for the correct form...That I am still wiating for.

So to you Asimmer and BB1 please chuck in your opinion on form.
I am talking specifically about seated calf raises. What & where should the toes be, ball of the foot and what is the end of he movement?

I, on virtually all of my exercises, use moderate weight..I'm 6,2" 200 pounds and previously a rugby player (some years ago) so have some strength and consequently consider benching 180 pounds moderate and so on.

But my calf raises I really need to load to feel any burn and push 225 pounds. If my form is wrong i shouldn't be able to do that right? I don't bounce, but do go through my 14-16 reps of three - four sets quite quickly.

Advise appreciated.

calves can take a lot of weight - they are strong muscles!

The ball of your foot should be on the bar, so that your heels can drop a little lower on the way down and stretch a little.

Your heels should lift straight up towards your calves and your toes press down into the bar.

Some people advocate turning your toes inward or outward to hit the calf muscle at different angles, but my kinesiology teacher told us that it doesn't really make the muscle work any differently than straight up and down.
i hope that helps.
