You need to actually do both. Without getting too awful technical, the calf is made up of many distinctive different muscle groups. The various types make the calves difficult to train in only one way.

For example, one 'area' is called the gastrocnemius muscle, and this portion responds well to heavy weight (i.e...less sets more weight). This is due to the makeup of this portion, which is loaded with fast twitch fibers.

On the other hand, you have the soleus. The soleus as you might guess by now will respond better to higher reps since it is mainly slow twitch fibers.

So you see the dilema here. I am a fan if you can fit it in your workout without being or feeling overworked a 3 day type workout for calves, splitting it up(the type of work) as mentioned above.

Hope this helps, again, do what you feel right with and with the intensity that fits your needs. For personal reference I am a fan of 'bent knee' type calf raises for my higher rep 'faster' workj, and standing straight legged type for heavier.

What is your goal with your calves?

When training your calf muscles is it better to go with higher reps per set or fewer reps with more sets? Is the 5x5 model good with each set you increase the weight?

I would like to have my calves to have that cool "dimple/indentation" at the bottom to be very pronounced. If that makes sense I'm not sure. And I'll give that 3 day a shot bb. 1 day heavy 1 day light 1 day combo or what you suggest? And thanks for the input.

Calves can take alot...I would do the whole workout each of the 3 days, changing up workouts when possible.(same type of exercises, simply different ones, in other words devise 3 different workouts utilizing the methods of low and high rep work, and use a different one each day).
