I have never been a member of a gym and have no idea what I would do once I entered the door.
Do I write down my routine and take that with me? I guess I'd feel like a dork looking at this paper after every exercise; but I don't want to go in there without a plan. I'm thinking of a small "hole in the wall" type of gym (Gold's Gym is too expensive for me). They do have trainers but the trainers don't devote themselves to just one person but walk around helping everyone. Also, any links on gym ettiquette would be appreciated. Thanks! |

You can print the FT workouts and either take it with you or memorize it. You'll get over the nerves after you go a few times.-------------- Dyslexics of the world...UNTIE!!!!!! Charlie

I have done it before........instead of that keep a log....alot of people do.( even girls)
get alil note book and write for example db benchpress db incline flys tricep extensions kick backs etc. besides each one right the number of sets and reps you got on each excercise plus weight....example bench press 4 sets of 8 at 40lbs or 4x8x40 this way you keep a log of your progress. as for gym etiquette..... clean up after yourself treat others as you'd wanna be treated leave your ego at the door( more so for guys than girls) -------------- My drinking squad, has a cheerleading problem!! |

Thanks everyone! I realize that it isn't a fashion contest or such; but I am kinda shy, that is why I posted about looking like a dork.
Too bad you guys don't live near me so you could go to the gym and "show me the ropes". Have a great afternoon! |

You can put your program into a duotang. Don't worry about looking like a dork! I'm used to it, and nobody notices.
You may also want to take one personal training session to help get you familiar with the eqipment, and they will have a niceSheet for you to log the training. So, don't dork out! -------------- Scales are for dead weight: We are not dead yet! Still trying to find out how to do the Hollywood Free Press. Ivan carivan@freetrainers.com Montreal Canada |

Ya... don't fret over it... I'm actually surprised, I seem to be the only one at my gym that actually logs my workout... after each set, I log the reps and weight... it's a great motivational tool also.-------------- This donut has purple in the middle, purple is a fruit. - Homer (Simpson) |

are you trying to pick a gym or have you already signed a contract?
if you have not yet signed up for the gym, try scouting several before you make a decision. Try to select a workout plan that works for you and then bring a notebook to write down everything you do. When scouting a gym look for all the equipment that you need and which you might need in the future....if the Dumbells go up to 50 lb that might be a problem....or if they don't have any barbells or free weights....look at the type of gym it is....ie clientele...to see if it matches your goals...check whether gym schedule fits your schedule......DON'T SIGN ANY CONTRACTS ON THE SPOT....ask to think it over....if they push then go to another gym....usually good gyms don't accost you....it's usually the crappy gyms that try to get u to sign a 3 yr deal...it's very very hard to get out of them once you're in.... also it's not dorky to carry a notebook...i am the only person at my gym who does it....i have done so for couple of years now and have made my biggest gains doing so.....it keeps me honest, accountable, and always gives me perspective from workout to workout.....and i have never seen anyone laugh at me.....if any1 gives you a weird look or laughs...they are just a$$es so keep that in mind.....I know my workouts and usually just do stuff on the spot...however if you're starting out....you make want to write out your workouts on the first couple of pages of your notebook to remind yourself if you forget....and use the remaining space to write down what you actually end up doing eahc workout...

Great tips! Thanks!
The gym I am thinking about has free weights as well as the usual gym equipment. The good thing about it is that it is a small "hole in the wall" type of gym and you can pay month by month if you want. No contracts. I went to Golds before and they wanted me to sign right on the spot; and it wasn't cheap. |

I enter my FT workout in my PDA and use it at the gym so i remember how many reps I am supposed to do and for what exercise. After each set, I enter the number of reps I actually did and at what weight. I've only had one person say something to ma and they just wanted to know if I was using a specific type of software of If I was just using the memo software. No one else cares.

Hey smurfetta, I know exactly where you're coming from. I felt very self concious after I joined a relatively large gym. Fortunately, they had a women's only gym as well, so I started out there, mainly doing cardio. I then decided to take the plunge and get a trainer and figured I may as well get a male trainer (a little shallow, but any motivation helps:). This made me comfortable with the wieght equipment and insured good form. Now I'm a regular in the main gym, workout log and all. I don't feel self concious at all (except when I bonked my head on some equipment once). I just plug into my MP3 and am oblivious to those around me --probably why I bonked my head:)
My advice, go for it! It does take a bit of time to get over being self consious and comfortable with all of the equipment, but it definetly comes. And track your workouts, if only to make sure your following your workout routine. I just use a little notepad. Get any feedback you can from the trainers, good form is everything!!! |
