I know this is kind of a strange question, but how much of a difference do y'all think there is between a diet whose main goal is to build muscle, and one that's designed for overall optimum "health?" I am, admittedly, a brand new student of good dietary habits as well as BB, so I may be way off base here, but it just seems like, though a high protein diet may be great for building muscle, it may not neccessarily be the best choice for overall perfect "health." I only say this because my bowel movements have never be worse. :( - too soft and irregular. I can only assume I've been focusing too much on maximum protein intake and not enough on my other dietary needs. A better balance would surely be beneficial. In all honesty, is the diet that ft trainers has designed for me good for building muscle AS WELL AS for achieving optimum "health," or is it more of a trade-off....a "compromise?"

I would think that you might want to put a little more fiber like foods in the diet. And maybe cut back a little on the protein. If you are having a lot of the "squirts" you may be using too much protein. I "BB" diet overall is by far more healthly for you than the USDA recommended diet. But you must have a good balance of carbs, fats and proteins. I hope this helps you out...I am sure more advice is on the way.....

Interesting topic Bretto. While I feel pretty good, stronger, less aches, etc. I think the 4-5000 calorie high everything but saturated fat diet I have been on has adversely effected my health. I say this because my cholesterol was recently checked and is higher than ever before, around 199. I was never above 140 before. My glucose was good, but the lack of cardio is killing me. I eat too much, and don't get the cardio I need. So, I have begun to cut and will introduce some cardio this week. I think for me, the experiment is over. I gained 20+ pounds of mass, the most by far in my lifetime at 31 yrs old. I am now ready to concentrate on wellness, being ripped and eating balanced meals low in fat. I plan on cutting out most of the supps too. We'll see how this works.
I am with you though, I think one needs to be careful how far he/she takes it, obviously, and make sure you are proactive about your doctor visits, checkups etc.

Bretto, are you still eating fruits and vegetables? Maybe that could be a problem or that you may not be eating enough of them.

Hey bretto I think balance is the key for overall health. A balenced diet with cardio and weights. If all your focus is on one thing you tend to neglect the others and our bodies have its own way of letting us know like ischjli mentioned with the cholesterol. I think it takes a while to figure out what combination workes best for you. My Doctor told me (I was having the same problem you mentioned along with high gas levels) The good foods (fruits veggies)your body needs will give you these side affects especially if you have not been used to eating that way. Fruit does it to me I have to watch how many servings I get more than 4/day and I think I will explode. Good luck

We discussed this thing about eating too much protein in another post (in the nutrition forum).
eating too much protein if you don't have the NEED for it, is not the very best idea..... (since the extra protein will turn into sugar and also it can be hard for your kidneys)
We, as body builders, have the NEED for a lot more proteins than other "normal" people.
Now if you want serious muscle gaining results, you have to calculate your needed daily protein intake.

Yeah, I'm still just under the 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight minimum, so I guess that's not all that much. I'm confused about the fruits and veggies though....some say more will correct my problem; others say it will make it worse. I don't get nearly enough carbs for fear of gaining weight, so maybe my fiber intake is too low. I guess I should trust ft's diet plan. Hopefully I'll figure out my balance before they find me dead on the toilet! LOL ....just like Elvis. :0)

LOL. Did you know that The King's estate brought in 27 million this year. Wow! Dead 25 years and still bringing it in.

Bretto, just curious, how many protein shakes are you drinking daily? Have you tried eating more or less of meat/fruit-n-veggies, or protein shakes to see which one seems to send you to the banyo more frequently? I seem to have your problem when I have a protein shake, and suffer mightly when drinking more than one. Par for the course I guess. I still take them, but I know I will suffer a little. When I have cut them out, and still eat my regular intake of solid foods, I notice I do not have the gas/loose stool problem.

Ischjli, this may very well be my problem. I drink GNC Whey Protein shake in the morning - 1 1/2 scoops which equates to 30 grams of protein, and then same thing again after my workout in the evening. I just can't seem to meet my minimum daily protein count without them. I'll try to experiment like you said, using "real" food whenever possible. I guess there truly is no substitute for real food without consequences.

I'm thinking about changing my name to "Sir Poopsalot" :0)

Sir P (aka bretto) - :) when you run out of protein, you might want to try another brand. I have the proverbial iron stomach from all the Thai food I eat but the brand of protein you mentioned affects even me. Not knocking GNC but with some people, some brands affect them differently.
