Depends on which exercise you do.. On hanging leg raises I slide a dumbell between my legs, crunches I hold weights behind my head. I'm sure there are other methods...

u can place a flat weight on your tummy (around your pecs) and hold it between your crossed arms while doing crunches

I used the cables a lot for my abs before..... Attach a rope on the upper cable, hold it in your hands and sort of role your body together (as bending, flexing..... sorry don't know how to explain it better) You need to feel it in your abs and not just in your hip flexors or in your lower back....
