I'd like your advice on the exercise program that ft has created for me. I chose the fat loss and tone program.
Is it possible to lose bf and gain lean muscle at the same time? Won't I lose lean muscle from doing cardio? Would it be better if I just focussed on doing one first? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would recommend focusing on one first, unless you are one who is genetically gifted with the ability to do both simultaneously. Preferrably, you should obtain lean muscle mass first, then tone/define.

Well, were you using weights before now? If not, maybe you ought to try the mass gaining program first.

So far, I train with weights 3x a week and do cardio three times a week (1 hour of either running or spinning). I've been doing this for about 2 1/2 months and find that I'm not really seeing any results in muscle gain and fat loss. The program that ft gave me is basically what I've been doing up until now.

Have you ever done a spinning class? It has to be the most intense form of cardio I've ever done... even more than running. Besides, I do more than just spinning, I run, I cycle, I play soccer (not all in the same week mind you)

Sfurtado, how are you measuring your progress? Do you take body measurements (i.e. biceps, thighs, waist, etc.) or use calipers to measure bodyfat occasionally? Or are you using just a weight scale?

ms. pooh- I've only been part of this site for 2 days. And I can tell you that all you have to do is ask that question in the search bar below (the search fitbuddy) and all posts made about your topic will arise. :) Good luck-

in answer to the original question without getting sidetracked I have personally researched and throughly exhausted some of these guys for answers and it is simple muscle burns fat so if you goal is to build muscle and tone with losing some BF then focus on weights if not seeing results add more weight...if your using machines go to free weights I found that free weights make you work harder as opposed to the pulley machines and such....if you're doing straight cardio your body gets used to it I reccomend dong a fitBuddy search on HIIT if you look at some of that info I'm sure you'll find exactly the solution to your woes

sfurtado, im in the same boat as you... ive been training for 2 months now. mind you i was terribly unathletic before i started... im not exactly what you call fat, but i want to lose that extra flab on my torso and abdomen. im the kinda guy ull see at a club and be like he must have a killer body, but then the shirt goes off your dissapointed :P
this is what ive been doing: my weight didnt budge a nano gram for the first month, i was doing straight cardio and machine weights. despite not loosing weight everyone around me had commented on my weight loss (my guess i lost fat weight that was replaced by muscle weight). i started doing HIIT, im burning alot more with this, sweat alot more and feel so much more energized. 4 days ago i started eating food i make at home and switched to free weights.
free weights work better because machines will target specific muscle where as with free weights, your core will try to stabilize your body so youll be working core muscles as well. 4 days 4 lbs!!! from this website, im understanding that build muscle first lose fat later works faster, but then i think to myself, yeah but gaining the muscle takes time. i dont really want to beef up and get my muscles to fit in my skin, on the contrary i want my skin to 'shrink-wrap' my muscle... then again, most of these guys are pros and im not.. u can always ask the personal trainer at your gym, im sure he can give u a second opinion.
